Base Pay Range $123,077.00/yr - $400,000.00/yr
Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Qualifications To qualify for this position – you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship
Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an approved school.
Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
Board certification.
Residency Training: Completion of an accredited core specialty residency approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, e.g., ACGME, AOA, or equivalent U.S. residency with 5+ years of verified U.S. practice.
Resident Program Providers (PRPs):
Current enrollment in an ACGME/AOA accredited residency program and meeting basic requirements.
Full physician license; PRPs appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
Not considered independent practitioners; scope of practice limited to supervised duties.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred experience in hematopathology.
Physical requirements – ability to perform clinical duties under normal and emergent conditions, including light lifting up to 44 pounds, reaching overhead, use of both hands, standing up to 1 hour, adequate near/far visual acuity, color discrimination, depth perception.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically and mentally perform duties in a clinic setting.
Light lifting up to 15–44 pounds.
Reaching above shoulder level.
Use of fingers and both hands.
Standing for up to 1 hour.
Near vision correctable to 0.20 (20/100) to 16–15 (20/15) in at least one eye.
Far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other.
Depth perception required.
Ability to distinguish basic colors and shades.
Duties
Work as a full‑time MD/DO Anatomic Pathologist for the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System in Cleveland, OH.
Sign out surgical, cytology, and hematopathology cases.
Collaborate with outpatient clinics, inpatient units, and the Comprehensive Cancer Center to ensure coordinated patient care.
Engage in teaching and research opportunities through Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Provide intraoperative consultation to surgical services.
Perform fine‑needle aspiration biopsies with rapid onsite evaluation for CT‑guided and EBUS‑guided procedures.
Read bone marrow specimens, diagnose lymphomas, and interpret flow cytometry results.
Interpret serum and urine protein electrophoresis.
Participate in autopsies and conduct prospective and retrospective case reviews.
Oversee a section of the laboratory, providing clinical consultations and quality‑assurance oversight.
Attend multidisciplinary conferences, such as tumor boards.
Supervise pathology trainees in surgical and clinical pathology and educate medical students, residents, fellows, and laboratory staff.
Serve as a surrogate for absent colleagues and address any delegated tasks by the Chief of Pathology.
Maintain patient privacy and comply with VHA policies and medical staff bylaws.
Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with a rotational call schedule.
