Project Geotechnical Engineer (Tailings and Dams)
NewFields is a close‑knit consulting team of civil, geotechnical, and geological engineers supporting exciting national and international mining projects. We develop site characterization, dam designs, and containment pads to protect communities and the environment.
Position Summary Based in Denver (Englewood), Colorado, you will lead the design and management of tailings dams and heap leach facilities worldwide. The role involves technical lead duties, deputy engineer‑of‑record or engineer‑of‑record responsibilities, and support for geotechnical investigations, design, monitoring, and client relationships.
Responsibilities
Advanced Engineering Analyses:
Develop and calibrate geotechnical and hydrological models; support constitutive relationships; conduct liquefaction assessments and dam breach risk analyses.
Design & Monitoring:
Evaluate bearing capacity and settlement; develop instrumentation programs; review and interpret monitoring data.
Deliverables:
Author technical reports, calculation packages, design documents, specifications, and presentations.
Construction Support:
Assist in construction drawings and technical specifications.
Project Management & Proposal Development:
Develop project plans, ensure on‑time delivery, and help prepare proposals and scopes of work.
Regulatory Compliance:
Stay current with GISTM and other relevant standards.
Client Relations:
Build and maintain professional relationships through effective communication.
Mentorship:
Guide entry‑level and staff engineers.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
B.S. minimum; M.S. preferred (Civil or Geological Engineering, ABET accredited).
Experience:
4+ years (equivalent for M.S. and Ph.D. noted).
Software:
MS Office, Rocscience, GeoStudio, Civil 3D; programming skills desired.
Lab Skills:
Standard material testing, index tests, compressibility, hydraulic conductivity, shear strength data analysis.
Registrations:
P.E. registration or a clear path to registration.
Travel:
Ability to travel in the U.S. and internationally.
Technical Writing:
Experience writing technical reports, memorandums, and proposals.
Additional:
Knowledge of geotechnical monitoring instrumentation, subsurface assessment tools, numerical modeling software.
