Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Technician -Histology
Position Summary:
At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Technician is a valuable member of our team who provides clinical services to our patient population, follows all laboratory procedures and protocols, and interprets policies as necessary to ensure proper patient care and a safe work environment. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care, possess excellent communication skills, and adhere to our high standard of excellence.
Responsibilities
Paraffin and embed biopsy, routine surgical specimens, placenta, autopsy, and research tissue.
Perform microtomy techniques to produce 2‑5 µm sections.
Stain, coverslip, and case‑assemble, label and distribute all prepared histology sections.
Follow all appropriate protocols for LIS systems: Copath, Ventana Benchmark, Ultra, Symphony, Vantage, and Copath.
Complete routine and special requests for additional levels, recuts, special stains and immunohistochemistry, verifying each upon completion in Copath and documenting for QA purposes.
Perform the battery of special stains and immunohistochemistry used in diagnostic histopathology.
Rotate responsibility for the above and perform necessary maintenance of all laboratory instrumentation, including reagent changes and temperature logs; perform QA documentation daily.
Assist Pathologists by grossing biopsy specimens.
Qualifications
NYS License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or NYS License as a Histology Technician.
BS degree in biology, medical technology, or other life sciences, or an AAS degree from an accredited program in Histotechnology.
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
ASCP certification in Histotechnology preferred.
Experience levels:
SL‑1 : 0‑2 years;
SL‑2 : 3‑5 years;
SL‑3 : minimum 6 years of relevant experience.
Preferred: NYS License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, minimum one year histology clinical laboratory experience (special stains, IHC, microtomy), bachelor’s degree in medical technology, biology, or related life science; experience with renal, nerve, muscle specimens and biopsy grossing.
Additional Requirements
Pre‑employment physical examination and medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine’s Employee Health Services.
Electronic reference check with at least three professional references.
4‑panel drug screen.
Regulatory compliance for pre‑employment screenings.
Submission of required New York State license(s) or certificate(s).
