Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet VA policy requirements and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program award (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Applicants must be seasoned clinicians who demonstrate extensive and progressive leadership experience – both as a clinician and administrator – and possess the ability to promote innovation, inspire organizational excellence, build teams, and coach clinical leaders toward common goals.
Exceptional interpersonal, operational, and facilitation skills are essential.
Must have the ability to meet VA established performance measure goals and a thorough knowledge of Veterans Health Administration standards and other accrediting bodies.
Preferred experience: Clinical and administrative experience in Geriatric or Extended Care.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizens are available in accordance with VA Policy).
Doctor of Medicine or equivalent, from an VA‑approved school.
Full, unrestricted medical license in a US State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program (ACGME, AOA, or other acceptable residency).
Residents in accredited residency training programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs are fully licensed physicians and may serve on an intermittent or fee‑basis, have a restricted scope of practice, and are not independent practitioners.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Physical standards: meet required physical performance, provide a physical examination prior to placement, subject to random drug testing, lift 15–44 pounds, perform routine movements such as pushing, reaching, and standing for 3–5 hours.
Duties
Oversee all Geriatric and Extended Care operations at VANCHCS sites throughout Northern California.
Provide leadership and direction for the GEC service line: coordinate clinical leaders, administrative managers, and supporting staff.
Plan, develop, implement, manage, and refine comprehensive patient management, clinical support, and administrative programs.
Improve coordination of services and customer service; oversee program development and prioritization of projects.
Support quality management and joint commission requirements; conduct systems redesign initiatives.
Develop strategic plans, policies, procedures, and organizational structures to fulfill service line mission.
Coordinate interdisciplinary service activities with other services and clinics; collaborate with other Service Chiefs to achieve interdepartmental cooperation.
Lead a program of staff development to upgrade knowledge and skills and prepare future leaders.
Manage personal clinic time allocation negotiated with the Deputy Chief of Staff.
Occasional travel to all Northern California sites and possible VISN sites.
