Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program award amount can be up to $200,000 and the eligibility period ranges from one to five years, determined after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants who are pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship, unless recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible per VA Policy.
Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a program approved by VA in the year the degree was obtained.
Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program, leading to board certification.
For VA physicians involved in academic training programs, board certification may be required for faculty status.
Approved residencies include: ACGME-accredited core specialties; AOA-accredited residency programs; or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice, as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME or AOA accredited programs who otherwise meet basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
PRPs are not independent practitioners and do not hold privileges.
PRPs operate under a scope of practice that allows restricted duties under supervision.
Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position and subject to random testing for illegal drug use after appointment. Requirements include lifting 15-44 pounds, pushing for up to 2 hours, reaching above shoulder, using both hands, walking and standing for 3-5 hours, kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneity, depth perception, color discrimination, and hearing aids permitted.

The Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics - Extended Care (GEC) Services oversees overall leadership, ensures quality of care, education and training of staff, and safety and ethical conduct of medical research.
The GEC Service is organized under two program pillars: Extended Home Care Programs and Home Care Continuum Programs, encompassing departments such as Community Living Center, Community Nursing Home Program, Geriatric Consultation/PAC/… (etc.).
The ACOS of GEC serves as a physician with approved clinical privileges at VA Pl HCS, expected average clinical time 0.1 FTE.
Position is located Honolulu, Hawaii.
Incumbent reports to the Chief of Staff, serves as a key clinical resource for Health System Leadership.
Roles include advising the Chief of Staff, Associate Director for Nursing and Patient Care Services, and Facility Director on patient care provision.
Responsibilities include ensuring high‑quality care for veterans, coordinating operations of GEC with other clinical and support services.
Oversight for service‑level quality and performance measures, utilization review, development of new programs and strategic planning.
Work across service lines to develop programs, meet performance measures, and improve care at VA PHCS.
Collaborate with university and Department of Defense partners to meet performance measures, education mission, and provide outstanding medical care.
Collaborate within GEC Services with clinical staff to achieve high standards of performance and conduct Environment of Care rounds.
Work with community care to ensure veterans receive high‑quality medical care and transitions between VA and community care.
Coordinate ongoing evaluation of medical staff assignments, including Focused Professional Practice Evaluation and ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation.
Ensure credentialing and privileging requirements are met by self and GEC licensed independent providers.
Facilitate compliance with standards from oversight and regulatory entities such as The Joint Commission, VCARE, OSHA, CAP, OIG, Ascellon, etc.
Participate in resource allocation to ensure adequate qualified personnel for patient care, including equipment and space acquisition.
Oversee establishment of program quality monitors and outcome measures, using data‑driven quality assurance processes.
Act as Acting Chief of Staff if requested.
