Sr Technician of Optical Engineering, Cloud Module R&D (San Jose, US)
Lumentum has an opportunity for a senior technician of optical engineering in the Cloud Module R&D team based in San Jose, US.
JOB DESCRIPTION We are seeking a Senior Optical Engineering Technician to support the design, development, prototyping, and production of advanced optical systems for optical sub-assembly and fiber optical transceivers. This role is hands‑on in the lab and on the production floor, working closely with engineers to assemble, align, test, and troubleshoot optical and opto‑mechanical subsystems.
You will contribute directly to building prototypes, validating designs, and ensuring smooth transfer to manufacturing, while mentoring junior technicians and helping establish best practices for optical labs and production support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assemble and align lenses, prisms, mirrors, fibers, and laser components using precision tools and fixtures.
Perform active and passive alignment of optical systems using microscopes, interferometers, and beam profilers.
Handle delicate optical components following cleanliness and ESD/contamination control protocols.
Operate and maintain optical test equipment (interferometers, spectrometers, MTF benches, power meters, beam profilers, integrating spheres).
Execute test plans to measure optical power, spectral response, beam quality, insertion loss, and image quality.
Collect, analyze, and document test data using LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Python scripts.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Education: AS/BS in Optics, Physics, Engineering Technology, or equivalent hands‑on experience.
Experience: 5–10 years as an optical or opto‑mechanical technician in R&D or production environments.
Skills & Tools:
Proficiency in optical alignment, fiber coupling, and laser setup.
Skilled with optical test instrumentation (interferometers, power meters, spectrometers, beam analyzers).
Comfortable reading optical/mechanical drawings and following work instructions.
Basic proficiency with data analysis tools (Excel, MATLAB, Python).
Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, excellent documentation practices, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
For strong, motivated candidate, not all skills are required.
Pay Range:
N40-USA-1 :$29.80 - $37.25
