Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Location: Providence, RI Job Function: Health Care Provider Employment Type: Full-time

Pay Range $56,849.00/yr – $93,402.00/yr (Base pay range). Additional compensation and benefits are discussed with a recruiter.

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the EDRP application.

Qualifications and Basic Requirements

United States citizenship is required; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English language proficiency – must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R). Non‑certified candidates may be considered for entry‑level positions under specific temporary appointment exceptions:

Non‑certified DRTs who meet ARRT eligibility may receive a temporary appointment as a graduate DRT under 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2)(B). The appointing official may waive the certification requirement for up to two years for a DRT providing care under the supervision of a certified DRT. The exception only applies at the GS‑5 entry level; for grades above entry level certification is required.

Education: Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by an accredited certificate or associate degree (JRCERT or other DOE‑recognized accreditor). Veterans’ preference and grandfathering provisions apply to current VHA employees meeting criteria.

Grade‑specific experience or education requirements (form and content outlined for GS‑05 through GS‑08).

Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) for each grade level (technical proficiency, patient safety, image quality, system operation, anatomical knowledge, interpersonal skills).

Physical Requirements: moderate lifting (45 lb or more), light carrying (15 lb), straight pulling, reaching above shoulder, both hands required, walking and standing for extended periods, repeated bending, rapid mental and muscular coordination, visual acuity standards, hearing, and mental/emotional stability.

Duties and Responsibilities

Perform routine and standardized diagnostic radiographic examinations.

Explain examinations and potential hazards to patients in understandable terms.

Operate and troubleshoot diagnostic radiology equipment; report major equipment malfunctions promptly.

Assist higher‑graded technologists with complex examinations, including fluoroscopic procedures.

Interact with veterans, family members, caregivers, providers, and staff in person or by phone.

Prepare oral contrast materials under radiologist direction for GI tract examinations.

Confirm patient identity using two approved identifiers and properly identify patient images.

Register and edit patient records in the Radiology Information System (RIS) and the Health Information Systems (HISRIS) interface (VISTA).

Perform routine and complex examinations in the main department, emergency department, patient wards, operating rooms, and portable examinations.

Maintain cleanliness and adequate supplies; report equipment malfunctions.

Work a Monday‑through‑Friday full‑time schedule with rotating weekends and holidays.

Adhere to all security, safety, and confidentiality protocols.
