The Vascular Sonographer I will learn to perform and document vascular studies in the Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory. The Vascular Sonographer I must always maintain a high standard of medical ethics and be self-motivated to increase knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Duties include greeting and assisting patients, preparing and maintaining examination rooms, maintaining laboratory equipment, assisting in test scheduling, and interacting with hospital staff to promote use of laboratory services for the best patient care. Principal duties and responsibilities

Consult with the Chief Sonographer or reading physician if unclear what vascular test is ordered. Develop the ability to obtain appropriate medical history and explain the testing procedure to the patient. Develop the ability to perform noninvasive peripheral vascular ultrasound tests efficiently and accurately and follow all documented protocols, including:
Plethysmographic studies of the peripheral arterial system. Determine correct cuff placement and obtain accurate measurements with Doppler ultrasound. Duplex ultrasound. Identify all anatomic structures without direct supervision, determine presence/absence and extent of disease, determine areas of interest, acquire images, and provide the reading physician with descriptive, concise information for the final report. Spectral analysis of Doppler ultrasound signals to identify arterial frequency shifts. Visual and audio interpretation of spectral Doppler flow signals are necessary for correct assessment. Determine and record the highest peak systolic velocities. Exercise testing with Doppler ultrasound arterial pressure measurements.
Adhere to documented hospital infection control guidelines at all times. Document concise preliminary results. Enter preliminary findings into the vascular laboratory reporting system in the hospital EMR. Review results to determine if it is necessary to notify the referring physician based on the department Critical Results policy. All reporting is documented in EPIC.
