About the Organization The organization is a response to the complex and interconnected barriers to housing for adults experiencing homelessness. Based on years of research and best practices for alleviating homelessness the organization provides trauma-informed intensive wrap-around care necessary to help people become and stay housed. Located on a 60,000 square foot campus just 3 miles outside downtown Detroit the organization houses 40 studio apartments where residents stay with access to comprehensive services including medical respite, psychological, substance use recovery, social and job-readiness support along with housing advocacy.
The organization operates as an intensive transitional program not an emergency shelter or permanent housing solution. Each resident receives an individualized treatment plan designed to support and empower them to overcome complex challenges while building trusting long-term relationships that continue beyond their campus stay.
About the Role The Clinical Director provides visionary leadership and operational oversight for all clinical and behavioral health services. This role ensures that resident care consistently aligns with person-centered, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented and evidence-based practices while maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence.
The Clinical Director supervises an interdisciplinary team including caseworkers, recovery staff, therapists, counselors, Care Coordinators, Community and Culture Manager and Care Plan Project Manager ensuring seamless integration across all service domains.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Care Coordination
Develop, implement and continuously refine clinical vision of care and its procedures, protocols, policies and practices across all behavioral health services
Oversee comprehensive intake assessment and individualized care planning processes ensuring integration with the organization's phased structure and resident expectations
Lead interdisciplinary case review meetings ensuring timely progress reviews and coordinated care across medical, psychiatric, addiction recovery and housing domains
Provide clinical supervision to caseworkers, recovery specialists and direct service staff ensuring documentation standards meet regulatory requirements
Coordinate with external partners including CHASS clinic, detox facilities, hospitals and community mental health providers to ensure continuity of care
Maintain a small clinical caseload providing direct therapy services as time and responsibilities allow
Recovery & Mental Health Program Management
Oversee integration of daily recovery programming including group therapy sessions, AA/NA participation, relapse prevention planning and peer support initiative
Ensure trauma-informed approaches are consistently implemented across all resident interactions and program components
Guide staff and educate board in restorative justice approaches and trauma-informed responses to resident challenges and behavioral concerns
Develop and refine resident curriculum and daily operational flow to ensure consistency, professionalism and evidence-based practice
Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of mental health screenings, assessments and interventions
Staff Development & Clinical Supervision
Provide direct supervision, coaching, mentoring and performance evaluation for clinical staff including licensed and unlicensed personnel
Support professional development, clinical competency and accountability across the team, making recommendations for advancement, additional training or personnel transitions
Maintain active clinical licensure and provide supervision hours to eligible staff pursuing licensure
Foster a learning environment that promotes continuous professional growth
Consult with the organization’s leadership in recruitment efforts for clinical positions, ensuring cultural fit and mission alignment
Program Quality & Compliance
Ensure adherence to state and federal regulations, licensing requirements, accreditation standards and ethical guidelines governing behavioral health services
Develop and maintain quality assurance protocols, conducting regular audits of case notes, care plans and clinical interventions
Oversee data collection, analysis and reporting for clinical outcomes, ensuring accuracy for grant requirements and program evaluation
Lead program evaluation efforts contributing to organizational logic models and continuous improvement initiatives
Maintain compliance with HIPAA, client confidentiality and professional ethical standards
Organizational Leadership & Culture
Serve as a stabilizing professional presence, modeling emotional maturity, cultural humility and consistent trauma-informed leadership
Act as collaborative partner to Director of Operations, exercising independent clinical judgment and making difficult decisions when necessary
Collaborate with the organization’s Day Center operations to ensure seamless service integration and relationship continuity
Promote organizational culture emphasizing accountability, professionalism, dignity and person-centered care
Champion social justice advocacy and systemic barrier reduction efforts
External Relations & Community Partnership
Promote and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners, healthcare systems, recovery organizations and government agencies
For targeted events, represent the organization at community meetings, coalitions and professional forums
Contribute to grant writing efforts, particularly for clinical service components
Advocate for policy changes that support housing stability and comprehensive behavioral health services
Qualifications
Masters or Doctoral degree in clinical social work or relevant clinical field
Previous experience in transitional housing, supportive housing or residential treatment settings
Grant writing experience, particularly for behavioral health and housing services
Bilingual capabilities reflecting community demographics
Experience with electronic health records and data management systems
Clinical Excellence: Advanced clinical assessment, treatment planning and intervention skills across multiple behavioral health domains
Leadership: Proven ability to inspire, motivate and develop high-performing interdisciplinary teams
Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with ability to engage diverse stakeholders
Cultural Responsiveness: Demonstrated cultural humility and experience serving diverse populations with respect and dignity
