Role Overview: The Senior Manager & Camp Director, Camps & Adventure plays a pivotal role in the execution of camp operations and outdoor adventure programs. With a focus on program design, implementation, and participant engagement, this role directs one of Girl Scouts of Northern California’s council-operated summer camps. The incumbent collaborates closely with staff, volunteers, and stakeholders to ensure the delivery of high-quality outdoor experiences, supports recruitment and retention, and contributes to the development of a vibrant outdoor culture within the organization while upholding its mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Implement Summer Camp & Outdoor Programs

Design, plan, and implement summer camp and outdoor/adventure programs.

Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and community partners to deliver progressive and intentional outdoor programs that promote personal growth and enhance participants' connection to the environment.

Oversee all programming at a GSNorCal summer camp, including hiring, pre‑season staff training, in‑season program management, camper engagement, and daily operations of program areas.

Develop and supervise year‑round adventure activities (e.g., swimming, low‑ropes, high‑ropes, archery, hiking, crafting, nature exploration).

Collaborate on long‑term planning for council‑wide and regional outdoor/adventure programs with a focus on membership recruitment, retention, and revenue generation.

Create and manage reporting, correspondence, work tools, tracking, customer service, and other activities to ensure effective program delivery.

Support marketing and recruitment plans to increase camper attendance.

Review program curriculum and ensure it meets all organizational standards and emphasizes contemporary issues, skill progression, and leadership development.

Assist in the evaluation and reporting process to measure program success.

Manage Outdoor Experience Offerings

Develop and manage year‑round outdoor program events and initiatives, both virtual and in‑person, aligned with the GSNorCal strategic plan.

Implement programs collaborating with key staff.

Monitor and track program and camp budgets.

Recruit, train, and supervise part‑time and seasonal staff/volunteers engaged in program delivery.

Support adventure programming at GSNorCal’s three council‑operated summer camps.

Develop and deliver training for staff and volunteers in adventure program areas.

Promote events through various media sources.

Participate in quarterly event planning and management, including publication of offerings on GSNorCal’s registration sites.

Collaborate with staff and volunteers to expand year‑round outdoor emphasis for girls and families.

Coordinate and Collaborate in Council‑Wide Programming

Partner with other program staff and volunteers on council‑wide, service unit, and troop programs and events.

Develop and adapt program content, materials, training, curriculum, marketing tools, and presentations.

Conduct presentations using in‑person, online webinars, or conference calls as required.

Work with cross‑functional teams to develop revenue‑generating outdoor program opportunities.

Collaborate with Community Based Program staff to develop outdoor programs for underserved communities.

Review curriculum to ensure it meets standards and emphasizes leadership development.

Assist in evaluation and reporting to measure program success.

Participate in all council‑wide activities and events, meetings, and cross‑functional teams.

Keep abreast of trends, industry issues, and GSUSA changes related to camps and adventure.

Undertake other projects and assignments as needed.

Provide Direct Support to Troops, Service Units, and Summer Camps

Coordinate property, camp, and service unit events to include the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Coordinate program area facilitation during camp and outdoor programming events.

Partner with staff and volunteers on council‑wide, service unit, and troop programs.

Implement data collection and analysis to evaluate event outcomes.

Develop, design, schedule, coordinate, and supervise camp and adventure programming for youth and adults.

Lead special projects and innovation teams as needed.

Plan, prepare, and deploy materials, supplies, meeting notes, correspondence, and reports using council technology.

Staff Training and Development

Provide coaching and modeling for staff to match activities with participant abilities and interests.

Assist in planning and facilitating enrichment training for staff.

Recruit, train, and supervise part‑time and seasonal staff/volunteers.

Hire, onboard, and manage camp staff, ensuring qualifications.

Develop performance evaluation processes and conduct regular assessments.

Address and resolve staffing issues promptly.

Manage and Maintain Specialty Program Areas

Manage and care for physical facilities and specialized equipment; ensure security and cleanliness.

Maintain documentation for equipment usage, maintenance, and repair requests.

Reserve, promote, and order specialized adventure equipment.

Ensure participants and staff follow safety procedures; comply with ACA standards and state codes.

Other duties as assigned to meet organizational goals.

Remote Work and Office Expectations This is a community‑based/field‑based hybrid position. Employees work in the field at camps and outdoor sites year‑round and from home on non‑field days. From September to May, employees commute to camps on weekends; during summer they live and work at camp.

Essential Qualifications

ACCT Level 2 Ropes Course Manager (certified or willing to obtain).

Archery Instructor (certified or Level 2).

Work Flexibility: Ability to work from home with high‑speed internet.

Education: Bachelor’s degree or two years of related experience, or equivalent.

Technical Proficiency: Microsoft Office or Google Suite.

Volunteer and Customer Service Experience: Minimum 2 years.

Project Management Skills: Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects.

Youth Empowerment: Strong interest in safe, empowering spaces for youth (K‑12).

Teaching and Coaching Experience: Minimum 2 years with adults and youth.

Community Engagement: Minimum 2 years working with youth, family, and volunteer service organizations.

Organizational Skills: Goal setting, budget management, and planning.

Leadership Experience: Leading and coaching youth program instructors and counselors.

Project Management: Experience managing complex projects.

Flexible Schedule: Ability to work evenings and weekends.

Driver’s License: Valid California license, reliable transportation, and insurance.

Background Screening: Must pass GSNorCal’s background screening process.

Desired Qualifications

Work Flexibility: Ability to work from home with high‑speed internet.

Bilingual Skills: Proficiency in Spanish or another language.

Girl Scout Knowledge: Familiarity with Girl Scout mission and programs.

Camp Regulations: Knowledge of California organized camp laws and ACA standards.

CRM Proficiency: Confidence in using CRM software.

Data Entry: Experience with accurate data control.

Advanced Excel Skills: Proficient in advanced functions.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs.

Physical endurance: prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and stretching.
