This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – Veteran Health Administration (VHA) – VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Miami, under Surgical Services. The incumbent serves as a Surgical Technician (ST) and is a member of the surgical team, providing assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures and participating in planning and implementing complex procedures under general supervision.
Base pay range $63,579.00/yr – $82,657.00/yr
Qualifications Applicants must hold at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level (e.g., surgical technician experience) or an equivalent combination of education and experience that meets the GS-07 requirements. Candidates may also qualify by having one year of graduate education related to the field (at least 18 semester hours) in lieu of experience. Preferred experience includes 1–3 years of surgical technician (operating room) experience.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assists the surgeon and other team members during all surgical procedures.
Acts as the primary scrub person, handling instruments, supplies, specimens, and equipment.
Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals, ensuring all supplies and equipment are available before the procedure.
Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure, anticipating the surgeon’s needs.
Handles specimens appropriately and follows infection control policies.
Provides care for the patient, including positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies, and assists the anesthesia provider.
Performs procedures such as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, and cutting sutures when required.
Functions as a second circulator for complex procedures under the direct supervision of the surgical team.
Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical set‑ups.
Maintains equipment and work areas, and provides guidance and support to nursing assistants and other surgical technicians.
Works a flexible schedule of 7:00 am – 3:30 pm on weekdays, with up to 70 hours per pay period.
Participates in the planning and implementation of complex procedures under general supervision.
Physical Requirements Physical requirements include manual handling of patients, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching for extended periods. The incumbent must maintain dexterity and aseptic technique while passing instruments with minimal effort.
