Lead Medical Laboratory Technician - Phlebotomy/Point of Care
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – pay range: $54,467.00/yr – $70,811.00/yr.
Summary This Lead Medical Laboratory Technician (Lead MLT) position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service – Blood Draw Room (BDR). Lead MLTs independently perform duties of significant scope and complexity and provide oversight for technicians and phlebotomy staff. They lead three or more lab support positions, provide direction to daily operations, and assume responsibility for integrating and monitoring standard laboratory protocols.
Qualifications
United States Citizenship (Non‑citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizens are available). In addition, candidates must meet the applicable educational requirements for certification.
Certification – must currently possess one of the following certifications as an MLT:
American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) – Board of Certification or Board of Registry
American Medical Technologists
American Association of Bioanalysts
English Language Proficiency – MLT candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
Experience – one year of experience equivalent to the GS‑06 grade level: knowledge of MLT principles, laboratory quality control and assurance procedures, ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair instrumentation, ability to work as a team member, and ability to use technical judgment to interpret laboratory results.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) – including instruction of students and newly hired staff, procurement procedures, technical oversight, and staff training planning.
Physical Requirements – participation in a pre‑employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre‑employment process.
Duties
Collects and processes specimens, ensuring accurate identification and preservation.
Evaluates specimen suitability for analysis and requests new ones if unusable.
Prioritizes ONCO‑STAT‑ASAP and routine specimen collection.
Performs routine waived testing and quality control procedures on Point‑of‑Care instruments.
Reacts to instrument malfunctions, troubleshoots, and performs simple repairs.
Reviews, interprets, and verifies test results; reports significant or critical values promptly.
Communicates results to the health care team and external customers as appropriate.
Maintains sufficient supply of phlebotomy materials and reports shortages.
Adheres to all safety requirements and laboratory regulations.
Prepares weekly staffing schedules, adjusts daily assignments, and ensures coverage.
Oversees specimen collection workflow, resolves routine issues, and ensures adherence to protocols.
Conducts competency assessments, direct observations, and training for staff and students.
Plans and coordinates ongoing training to maintain staff proficiency.
Oversees daily/weekly/monthly safety checks and quality control testing for CoaguChek and other Point‑of‑Care devices.
Documents incidents and provides workload and quality reports.
Assists the Ancillary Testing Coordinator with Point‑of‑Care testing program, including reagent lot validation and proficiency testing.
Compensation & Benefits
Daytime hours – Monday through Friday; no weekends or holidays.
Paid Time Off – 37‑50 days per year (13‑26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 Federal holidays).
Parental Leave – up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment.
Child Care Subsidy – up to 25% of eligible childcare costs for families with income below $144,000, available after 60 days.
Retirement – Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
