The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking a dedicated Maintenance Specialist 5 to join our Southwest Region Bridge Maintenance team. In this role, you will lead and direct Bridge Maintenance Specialists while operating a variety of specialized bridge maintenance equipment to ensure the safety, reliability, and functionality of state bridge structures. This position plays a critical role in maintaining essential infrastructure, responding to emergencies, and supporting environmental stewardship across the region. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to WSDOT’s mission of providing safe and efficient transportation for the people and businesses of Washington. What to Expect This position requires availability on weekends and holidays for non-scheduled emergencies. Must report to duty station within 60 minutes of after-hours calls and work alternate and emergency shifts as needed. Respond to emergencies in all weather, 24/7, either alone or with a team. Long hours and occasional night work may be required, along with standby and call-back duties.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Specialist 5 will:

Oversee the maintenance and repair of more than 530 bridge structures across WSDOT’s Southwest Region, ensuring safe and efficient operation.

Plan and supervise bridge maintenance crews performing work in trades such as welding, carpentry, concrete repair, steel fabrication, rigging, and equipment operation.

Coordinate equipment, materials, and personnel to complete bridge maintenance and structural repair projects efficiently and within specifications.

Inspect completed work for conformance to plans and specifications, collaborating with Bridge Preservation staff on inspections and priority repairs.

Lead and develop Bridge Maintenance Specialists by assigning work, scheduling resources, training staff, and conducting performance evaluations.

Promote and enforce safety compliance by conducting safety meetings, monitoring work practices, and ensuring use of personal protective equipment.

Collaborate with internal and external partners, including Project Engineers and environmental agencies, to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Prepare and maintain accurate project records, cost estimates, and reports in systems such as the Highway Asset Tracking System (HATS).

Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are

required :

Commercial Driving Proficiency : Possesses an unrestricted Class A CDL with “N” endorsement to legally operate vehicles and equipment in Washington State.

Traffic Control and Safety Knowledge : Holds a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card and applies traffic control practices per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or has the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.

Crew Leadership and Supervision : Demonstrated experience leading and/or supervising crews by providing clear direction, coordinating work, and making sound decisions under pressure.

Communication and Collaboration : Ability to communicate effectively and professionally across diverse and inclusive settings, both internally and externally, with technical and non-technical audiences.

Safety and Equipment Operations : Knowledge of safety practices, construction standards, and the operation of heavy equipment to ensure safe and efficient work execution.

Technical and Software Proficiency : Utilizes Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Teams, cloud-based tools, and project or asset management databases to perform professional work tasks.

Respectful Workplace : Demonstrated ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.

In addition to the above, the following is also required:

Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Ability to manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.

Ability to respond to the assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours callout.

Ability to work at elevated heights, above 100 feet over land or water.

Journey-Level Trade Skills : Demonstrates skill in journey-level trade work, ensuring precision and high-quality workmanship in assigned maintenance and repair tasks.

Team Leadership and Mentorship : Exhibits proven leadership in managing diverse teams, mentoring staff, and promoting collaboration across disciplines.

Project and Regulatory Expertise : Applies knowledge of project planning, cost estimation, and bid evaluation, while interpreting bridge plans, inspection reports, and ensuring environmental compliance for bridge work.

Structural and Systems Understanding : Experience reading and interpreting bridge construction plans and demonstrates understanding of structural systems, including concrete, steel, wood, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic components.

Educational Foundation : Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate.

Duties involve physical tasks outdoors in various weather conditions, including high winds and nighttime work. Responsibilities include performing near high-speed traffic, at heights over 100 feet, and in confined spaces. Tasks require manual labor, operating machinery, climbing ladders, and manipulating equipment weighing 50 pounds or more. Workers must maneuver in tight spaces on vehicles and structures, and may be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, and air quality hazards. Additionally, traffic control may occur from both stationary and moving platforms.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
