Job Description Under the supervision of the Deputy Regional Director for Public Health Region 9/10 and guidance from the Dental Director of the Oral Health Program for the Department of State Health Services, the Regional Dentist serves as the supervisor of the Region 9/10 Oral Health program and provides preventive oral health services to eligible populations. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Preventive Dentistry (65%)
Lead the Region 9/10 oral health initiatives, planning and prioritizing preventive activities.
Supervise and evaluate the Regional Dental Hygienist in preventive services, education, record keeping, and reporting.
Provide technical assistance for integrating oral health into other departmental programs.
Coordinate school-based screening and sealant projects.
Maintain data sets for dental disease surveillance.
Oversee regional preventive clinics in community sites.
Manage purchase and maintenance of dental supplies and equipment.
Provide annual grant updates and reporting to the Oral Health Program.
Support other regions during personnel shortages.
Professional Development & Community Support (10%)
Develop liaisons with dental professional groups and public/private organizations at local, county, and state levels.
Serve as a supporting member for regional oral health coalitions.
Personnel Policies (10%)
Implement departmental HR policies and procedures.
Assist in maintaining the dental hygienist’s qualifications and training.
Conduct annual performance evaluations of the dental hygienist.
Maintain personal professional licensure and continuing education.
Technical Assistance (10%)
Provide consultation on regional dental program activities.
Support other regional community health services team members.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Participate in disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.
Maintain immunization coverage including measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, TDaP, and influenza.
Initial Screening Criteria
Current license to practice dentistry in Texas.
Current CPR certification.
Valid Class C Texas driver’s license or equivalent.
Minimum 2 years experience working in dentistry.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration (Required)
Current license to practice dentistry in Texas.
Current CPR certification.
Valid Class C Texas driver’s license or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Required)
Knowledge of modern dentistry principles and prevention.
Knowledge of public health dentistry socioeconomic issues.
Knowledge of fiscal and budgetary operations.
Knowledge of field research, statistical methods, and dental epidemiology.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and agency laws, regulations, and policies.
Knowledge of education principles.
Staff development skills.
Liaison activities with state and/or federal agencies and professional groups.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to change.
Clear communication skills, both verbal and written.
Professional interpersonal skills with the public.
Teamwork skills.
Proficiency in email, Word, Excel, and database software.
Competency in composing narrative reports.
Public speaking and speech development skills.
Long‑range planning and goal‑setting ability.
Sound judgment and decision making.
Ability to follow directions and organize tasks.
Creative problem‑solving skills.
Conduct oral health surveillance activities.
Safe operation of a state‑owned or personal vehicle with acceptable driving record.
Additional Information
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship is required.
Salary will follow DSHS starting salary guidelines and depend on available funds.
Position may require up to 60% travel and hours outside 8:00 am‑5:00 pm, Monday‑Friday.
