Job Summary Under the direction of the Inpatient Pharmacy Director or Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor, the pharmacist provides functional direction and training to Inpatient Pharmacists and other pharmacy personnel. The pharmacist consults with patients and medical personnel regarding medication therapy, dispenses compounds, procures, stores, and distributes pharmacy products, and provides medication information and product identification. The pharmacist prioritizes workflow, removes obstacles, and resolves problems to ensure high quality service.

Essential Responsibilities

Provide functional direction and training to inpatient pharmacists and other pharmacy personnel; monitor and manage the medication therapy of specific hospitalized or ambulatory patients to assure optimum therapeutic results and cost‑effective prescribing.

Review laboratory test results and patient progress to detect adverse drug reactions; confer with and assist medical personnel in laboratory test interpretation and patient care and treatment. Interview patients for medication use, allergies and sensitivities; document information in the electronic medical record; advise patients on medication use, storage, compliance, precautions, and warnings.

Dispense, compound, procure, store, and distribute pharmacy products; monitor effectiveness and accuracy of medication distribution; review physician orders, enter orders in the electronic medical record, verify accuracy of transcription, medication preparation and dispensing, and verify correct medication delivery.

Participate in assigned education and training programs, provide in‑services and educational programs for pharmacy, other medical personnel, and patients, and participate in patient‑care rounds, hospital committees, utilization review, and quality management programs.

Perform other duties as required.

Coach, problem‑solve, and provide functional direction to other employees without authority to hire, fire, or discipline.

Education B.S. degree in Pharmacy OR Pharm.D required.

Licensure and Certification Pharmacist License (California) within 1 month of hire; Basic Life Support; National Provider Identifier required at hire.

Additional Requirements

Comprehensive knowledge of current pharmacological and biopharmaceutical principles, medical terminology, pathologies, disease states, and related information for a medical management plan.

Knowledge of aseptic technique and the preparation of sterile IV products and chemotherapeutic agents.

Knowledge of emergency medications and drug monitoring.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to operate the pharmacy computer system(s) and other equipment; generate prescription labels.

Must pass background check.

Must be able to work in a labor/management partnership environment.
