The function of a Senior Trial Court Staff Attorney is to provide legal advice to judges, magistrates, and court personnel. The role includes legal research, preparing memoranda, drafting opinions, orders, and reports, and advising judges on pre‑trial, trial, and post‑trial motions.
Work will be performed in‑person/on site at a courthouse location. This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work/onsite schedule after a 90‑day period.
Responsibilities
Conduct legal research on substantive and procedural matters, and prepare legal documents such as memoranda, opinions, judgments, and orders.
Review files, evidence, depositions, pleadings, motions, legal briefs, memoranda of law, proposed orders, and other related documentation to advise judges in a variety of legal areas.
Attend staff meetings, technical or professional workshops, seminars, or conferences to improve professional skills.
Draft orders, review briefs, conduct legislative research, and track legislation applicable to the court.
Assist the Court’s General Counsel or Court Administrator by reviewing contracts or drafting administrative memoranda and orders to promote efficient administration of justice.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
Member in good standing with the Florida Bar.
Five (5) years of experience in the practice of law or as a law clerk in an appellate or trial court.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of legal principles, statutory and case law, court rules and procedures.
Proficiency with word processing software such as Word; typing ability to produce memos, orders, etc.
Ability to conduct legal research including use of Westlaw and/or Lexis.
Logical and analytical reasoning.
Communication skills – orally and in writing.
Discretion, confidentiality, impartiality, honesty in handling matters before the court.
Ability to work effectively with others and/or independently.
Working Conditions / Physical Demands
Moderate noise; business office setting.
Work involves standing, walking, sitting, talking, listening, reaching; must be able to transfer up to 10 lbs.
