Job Summary
Located in the nation's capital, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the chief legal office of the District of Columbia. The Office enforces the laws of the District, defends and provides legal advice to the District’s government agencies, and protects the interests of the District’s residents. This position is located in the Civil Litigation Division, which defends the District of Columbia—including District agencies, officers, and employees—in civil lawsuits filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking monetary damages, equitable remedies, and other relief.
Duties and Responsibilities As a Trial Attorney in the General Litigation Sections of the Civil Litigation Division, you will:
Prepare and file pleadings
Serve and respond to written discovery
Take and defend depositions
File and respond to procedural and dispositive motions
Negotiate settlements
Conduct trials and contested hearings
Litigate disputes regarding attorney’s fees
Manage an active caseload of at least 25 civil cases and serve as first chair on various litigation and trial teams.

Qualifications and Education Incumbent must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school and at least one year of specialized experience in civil litigation.
Active membership in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar, or ability to waive and be admitted within 360 days of appointment.
License and Certification Applicants must be members of the District of Columbia Bar in good standing or be able to waive and be admitted within 360 days. Successful appointment requires admission to practice in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Working Conditions / Environment Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Generally, the role is sedentary with some walking, handling, and carrying of light to moderately heavy objects (e.g., case records, briefcases, exhibits).
Other Significant Factors Pay Plan
LA-0905-12 ; Salary negotiable up to $91,673 depending on qualifications and funding availability.
Number of Vacancies : One (1).
Tour of Duty : Monday‑Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. In‑person reporting with limited telework and flexible schedules available upon eligibility.
Promotion Potential : No known promotion potential.
Collective Bargaining Unit : AFGE Local 2401.
Type of Appointment : Legal Service – 13 Month Term.
