This position provides highly advanced psychiatric care under the direct supervision of the State Hospital Medical Director. Responsibilities include direct patient diagnosis and treatment, specialized psychiatric procedures, staff oversight, leadership of recovery teams, quality improvement of psychiatric services, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Lead Psychiatrist engages in committee participation, safety and risk management, data monitoring, and compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards. Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attend work on a regular basis; work specific shift schedules, rotating schedules, and heavy overtime per agency leave policy. Serve in on-call/off-duty status on rotating schedules to meet operational needs. Perform psychiatric assessments, medication reviews, and direct psychiatric clinics per SH policies and procedural standards, including TJC, CMS, TAC, and state executive formulary. Utilize multidisciplinary approach to psychiatric treatment, create recovery plans, review lab work, and record accurate treatment deliberations. Lead clinical staff meetings, consult with medical and mental health colleagues, manage acute psychiatric care, and author emergency restraints. Monitor system data and trends; present improvement recommendations; present changes to recovery plans and attend performance improvement meetings. Maintain communication with Medical Director, Superintendent, and other staff about needed information and continuity of services. Participate in required training, HIPAA policies, state and federal regulations, and TJC standards; travel as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

General medicine and psychiatry methodology and procedures. Person‑centered individualized care and recovery plan development. Behavior treatment principles and collaborative teamwork. Texas formulary guidelines for maximum medication doses and documentation of exceptions. In‑patient psychiatric disorders clinical services and diagnostic tools. Electronic healthcare system usage and Microsoft Office proficiency. Assessment, diagnosis, prescription and supervision of psychiatric treatment under applicable laws and regulations. Development, implementation, and oversight of case histories and medical records. Ability to resolve complex medical issues using consultant input and literature guidelines. Facilitation of unified multidisciplinary team approach for high‑quality patient care. Participation in continuous quality improvement and adherence to improvement plans. Management of polypharmacy, justification, and documentation for multiple psychotropic medications. Independent judgment, advanced time management, and organizational skills. Completion of annual and specialty training for updates in required skills and knowledge. Effective oral and written communication. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

Must be licensed (unrestricted) as a medical doctor by the State of Texas and be board‑certified or board‑eligible in psychiatry in Texas. Must hold a current DEA registration, possess a National Provider Identifier (NPI#) as defined by Medicare Part B, and enroll as a Medicaid and Medicare Part B provider. Initial Screening Criteria

At least four (4) years of experience working as a psychiatrist. At least four (4) years of experience working with people with psychiatric disorders. Residency training completed. Additional Information

Applicants must pass fingerprint criminal background checks, pre‑employment drug screens, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and LEIE. Males between 18‑25 years must register with the Selective Service. Flexibility in work hours may be required, including overtime and extended hours. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures is mandatory; vaccination is required for all disease‑preventable conditions.
