About Effective, secure communication in the cyber domain is essential to the everyday operations of military intelligence in America’s Navy. Information Professionals oversee the seamless operation of the global Naval network environment and play a key role in supporting Navy missions.

Responsibilities

Plan, acquire, secure, operate, and maintain the Naval network and the systems that support Navy operations and business processes.

Lead Naval network warfare missions by developing tactics and procedures to realize tactical, strategic, and business advantages afloat and ashore.

Drive interoperability with joint, allied, and coalition partners.

Build professional excellence through education, training, certification, and milestone qualifications.

Optimize organizational effectiveness through cutting‑edge technologies, knowledge management techniques, and a culture of innovation.

Oversee the work of Information Systems Technicians – Enlisted Sailors (no degree required) who serve as specialists in information technology.

Work Environment

Service on Battle Group staffs aboard ships at sea.

Assignments in C4I/Space/Surveillance on shore tours.

Staff positions on major Navy and joint staffs.

Command of key communication and surveillance facilities worldwide.

Training & Advancement Successful candidates attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, R.I., followed by a five‑week Information Professional (IP) Basic Course in Pensacola, Fla. IPs also complete specific qualifications during fleet tours and are encouraged to pursue advanced education. Promotion opportunities are competitive and based on performance.

Education Opportunities

Pursue advanced degrees at institutions such as the Naval Postgraduate School or Navy War College.

Complete Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) at a service college.

Obtain a master’s degree in C4I, space, information systems, computer science, or modeling and simulation.

Explore graduate certificates, DoD certifications, federal executive fellowships, and information assurance scholarships and internships.

Qualifications & Requirements A four‑year bachelor’s degree in a technical field (e.g., Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Operations, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or General Engineering) is required. Candidates for officer positions must be U.S. citizens, willing to serve worldwide, eligible for a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance, and qualified for sea duty. Additional qualifications may vary based on current service status and prior experience.
