Overview

Operate and maintain the City of Wasilla’s wastewater collection and treatment systems. Ensure systems are kept in excellent working order by following the operations and maintenance manual and providing an excellent recurring work program keeping the facilities in a safe and functional capacity. Also, operate and maintain the City’s water treatment and distribution systems as a secondary function. Responsibilities

Operate wastewater treatment facilities, septage receiving facility, bar screens, grit separator, screen press, recirculation pumps, flow meters, aeration blowers, sewer lagoons, digester, drying beds, settling clarifier, subsurface drain fields and operate a vacuum pumper truck. Maintain wastewater treatment plant by exercising valves, adjusting aeration blowers, troubleshoot electrical pumps and controls, and aeration lagoon diffuser lines, remove sludge accumulation from lagoons, clarifier, drying beds, and operate stand-by generators. Perform monthly wastewater sampling, complete chain of custody and maintain sampling logs. Operate wastewater collection facilities, lift stations, recirculation pumps, flow meters, and inspect and maintain new service connections. Maintain the wastewater collections system, pump septic tanks at regular intervals, exercise valves, air relief valves, detect and repair leaks, troubleshoot pumps and pump controls. Operate water production and distribution facilities by controlling well production, storage reservoir volumes, booster stations, pressure reducing stations, and establishing new connections. Maintain collection mains by exercising valves, detecting and repairing leaks, and troubleshooting electrical pumps and controls. Locate service utility lines by reading and understand as built/record drawings and use electronic equipment to find buried mains lines and service lines. Establish new sewer service connections. Operate live tap machines and fusion equipment for HDPE pipe. Steam thaw mains and service connections, pump vaults, septic tanks, and service key boxes by operating a mobile steam boiler. Perform weekend rounds and security checks on systems and facilities, record data on pumps, wells, and reservoir activity, collect samples for measuring Cl2, pH, D.O. and adjust equipment as required. Ability to respond to utility call outs within 20 minutes from call, follow check list to troubleshoot problems, and repair and bring systems back into service. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned. Qualifications

Knowledge of standard methods in water/wastewater fields and associated State and Federal regulations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills along with the skill of effectively reading equipment and construction schematics. Ability to operate basic vehicles, sewer pump truck, Rodder vacuum truck, dump truck, front-end loader, rubber tire backhoe, and a forklift. Homeland Security orientation tests (Incident Command Systems) will be required as a term of employment taken online: IS-100.b within fifteen days of date of hire, and IS-200.b, IS-700.a, and IS-800.b within 45 days of date of hire. Four years’ experience in sewer and water operations. High school diploma, GED or equivalent. Experience operating mechanical devices, pumps, motors, and hydraulic pressures. Must possess a valid State of Alaska Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement within 6 months from date of hire and be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must provide a current driving record (dated within 30 days of request) from the State of Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles. Must possess State of Alaska level II certifications in wastewater collections and wastewater treatment. Must test for level III certifications within 1 year. Must possess State of Alaska provisional certification in water treatment and water distribution at time of hire. Must convert this provisional certification to a level II within 3 years from date of hire.
