Trial Preparation Assistant
Join the Queens District Attorney’s Office full‑time, entry‑level Trial Preparation Assistant positions.
Trial Preparation Assistants have a wide array of responsibilities that may differ depending upon bureau assignment. Generally, TPAs assist Assistant District Attorneys with preparing cases at all stages.
Responsibilities include:
Interviewing members of the New York City Police Department, as well as victims and/or witnesses, to create affidavits;
Gathering, creating and compiling the paperwork required to create case files;
Drafting legal documents and correspondence;
Obtaining necessary evidence/documentation relating to cases from outside sources;
Identifying, locating, communicating and scheduling various witnesses;
Coordinating travel arraignments;
Assisting attorneys in the courtroom;
Conducting legal research and writing;
Handling Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and exhibit requests.
Preferred Education and Qualification Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies or related area or equivalent education and/or experience;
Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or similar capacity, or with an ABA approved paralegal certificate;
All candidates must have at least a high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
TPAs must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to interact with staff at all levels, and to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment with competing demands. Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach, including strong follow‑up skills, accuracy, and the ability to meet deadlines is also required.
Job Details:
Schedules vary based on the needs of the bureau;
Starting salary (non‑negotiable): $55,000; upon completion of two years of continuous service, salary: $60,000;
