Engineering Assistant I or II
Join the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) as an Engineering Assistant I or II.
This position is part of TxDOT’s Engineering Assistant (EA) Program, designed to provide recent engineering graduates with intensive training, hands‑on experience, and a direct path to professional licensure.
Responsibilities
Assists in survey activities.
Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation‑related activities.
Performs construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
Performs engineering calculations for plan quantities as part of PS&E preparation activities.
Performs traffic barricade inspections, identifies problems and assists with resolution of traffic control plans.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Essential Duties

Minimum Qualifications Education
– Engineering Assistant I and II
Mandatory: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science.
Acceptable substitutions: Master’s degree in engineering or equivalent; Doctoral degree in engineering.
Substitutions must be from an institution that offers a Bachelor of Science degree accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET).
Experience
Engineering Assistant I: None.
Engineering Assistant II: One (1) year of engineering‑related experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver’s license.
Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate.
Engineering Assistant II: Texas Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT).
Competencies
Engineering Assistant I:
Knowledge of transportation design engineering principles, practices, and methods; application of engineering theory.
Traffic engineering terminology and fundamentals.
Plan review methods, processes, and procedures.
Inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.
Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
Computer‑aided drafting and design systems.
Engineering workstations and technology applications.
Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Engineering Assistant II:
Considerable knowledge of all competencies above.
Highway construction and maintenance.
Reading and interpreting plan schematics, blueprints, and maps.
Performing calculations for material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data, and engineering calculations.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time; lift or carry up to 25 lbs. frequently.
Conditions of Employment
Pre‑employment physical and drug test required.
Must pass drug test; random drug testing applies to safety impact positions.
Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP) required.
Required to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and under inclement weather; may be contacted during off‑duty hours for emergencies.
Required to wear personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements.
