Purpose Of Santa Fe Costumer Role The Santa Fe Costumer is responsible for overseeing Santa Fe’s costume department and the costuming needs for performances presented by the Santa Fe Outreach and Dance Barns programs. The Santa Fe Costumer reports to the Dance Barns Artistic Program Director and works to carry out the mission and policies of NDI New Mexico with excellence. The Costumer delegates duties and provides secondary oversight of the Santa Fe Costume Assistant and is a member of the organization’s Artistic Staff.
Primary Responsibilities
Responsible for costuming and shoes, including creation, rental, fitting, laundry, and storage
Prepares backstage areas for performances and is present backstage to address any costume needs during performances, including Dance Barns Spring Into Motion, Dance Barns Junior and Senior Level Showcases, Santa Fe and North Outreach Events, and special events as needed
Oversees Costume Assistant in preparing and transporting costumes, sets, props, and banners (in coordination with Technical Directors) to and from designated residency sites, and directs costuming for those residency performances as needed
Prepares and launders t-shirts for Santa Fe and North Outreach assemblies, in‑school events, small residencies, and special events and related programs as needed
Manages costume volunteers and assistants
Orders, maintains, and organizes shoe supply for Santa Fe and North Advanced Training Teams and oversees distribution and fitting at start‑up of these programs, both during the school year and for related summer programs
General Duties
Schedules regular office hours at The Dance Barns, 15–20 hours per week
Works off‑site hours as needed with permission from supervisor
Attends all enrichment workshops and meetings as needed, including joint staff meetings
Maintains regular communication and coordinates closely with Program Artistic Directors and Albuquerque Costumer to assist with Albuquerque programs’ needs, sharing resources when available and addressing inventory changes, needs, additions, etc.
Inputs and maintains information into a costume inventory (when implemented)
Upholds all Management and HR policies and procedures
Working Conditions, Environment and Physical Requirements
Functions performed in a variety of environments including NDI New Mexico offices, schools, residency sites, and other locations
Requires reliable transportation and reimbursable in‑state travel to NDI New Mexico locations, participating schools, residency sites, and community events
Requires weekend and evening hours
May be required to lift up to 25 lbs.
May be required to navigate stairs
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
Sewing skills; creation of new costumes, and maintenance and tailoring of current stock
Creative vision for aesthetic presentation of costumes in dance performances
