Department Summary MITRE’s Artificial Intelligence Innovation Center’s Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department develops cutting‑edge autonomous systems, robotics capabilities, and AI solutions for a safer world. The department seeks a self‑starter to build robotics and AI projects, supporting sponsor programs and advancing MITRE’s AI and autonomy efforts.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree, 3 years with a Master’s degree, or a PhD with relevant experience, or equivalent education and work experience.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret‑level U.S. Government security clearance.

U.S. citizenship required for security clearance.

Related experience in autonomy and AI.

Understanding of autonomous systems across DoD, Services, Intelligence Community, DHS, industry, and academia.

Deep experience in robotics‑relevant fields such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, control theory, human–machine teaming, and multi‑robot systems.

Ability to articulate autonomy‑specific challenges (perception, reasoning, behaviors, collaboration), discuss critical issues, and identify gaps.

Familiarity with state‑of‑the‑art ROS 2 and Docker.

Knowledge of challenges in developing robust autonomous and AI systems for real‑world scenarios.

Excellent verbal, written, PC, presentation, and communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, learn new technologies, and adapt to changing environments.

At least 50% hybrid on‑site work required.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in robotics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or related field.

Knowledge of advances in autonomy and AI evaluation capabilities in industry and academia.

Domain knowledge of swarming systems, agentic AI, manufacturing robotics, and/or missile defense.

Experience configuring and writing software for open‑source flight controllers (ArduPilot, PX4, Mission Planner, QGroundControl, etc.).

Experience with rapid prototyping, fabrication, and electronics.

Experience field testing autonomous systems, especially unmanned aerial systems.

Knowledge of edge computing, C‑SWAP (compute, size, weight, and power) platforms, or surrogate/scale platforms.

Leadership or participation in teams implementing and evaluating AI and autonomy algorithms.

Developed, proposed, and executed autonomy research.

Clearance Requirements Minimum clearance: Secret.

Compensation $142,000 – $177,500 – $213,000 annually.

Work Location Type Hybrid.
