Overview

Library assistants are the frontline for library services and require delivery of excellent customer service and strong interpersonal skills. Under the supervision of a managing librarian, the library assistant will perform a variety of library related tasks such as assisting patrons at the public service desk. You will demonstrate information literacy, process library materials, copy cataloging, assist with computer related tasks and new technologies, interlibrary loan requests and processes. Additionally, the library assistant will assist with programs and create marketing material for distribution. This position existed to provide Corpus Christi residents library services and resources. Evenings and weekends are required and you may be tasked to assist with other locations.

Responsibilities • Provide continuous assistant to library patrons at the public service desk • Communicate effectively to apply satisfactory customer service skills to individuals with diverse backgrounds • Encourage patrons to comply with established policies by explaining policies and procedures in a firm but tactful manor • First point of contact with patrons to resolve complaints related to fines and fees • Maintain confidentiality when inputting and reviewing patron records in the Integrated Library System (ILS) • Use ILS to evaluate patron records, clear patron records and input collections from patron correctly to keep ILS system balanced • Accurately handle payment transactions for both cash register and credit/debit card point of sale • Assist and instruct patrons using library knowledge of resources (print and electronic) the readers advisory • Assist patrons using knowledge of electronic devices and applications used by the library • Assist patrons with copiers, digital microfilm reader/scanners and other equipment common to the library environment • First point of contact to promote library programs and resources to patrons • Explains and performs intra and interlibrary loan procedures, document delivery, resource sharing, reserves and other information retrieval options • Processes interlibrary loan requests to submit to La Retama ILL department using resources provided by Texas State Library • At La Retama - ILL department performs all processes related to ILL service including receiving, packing, unpacking, shipping, and reports • At La Retama - performs all functions related to processing purchased materials such as unpacking, verifying invoices, and contacting vendors when shipments are incorrect • Prepares items for patron access using basic knowledge of cataloging principles and functions of OCLC • Must be able to work with minute details and perform copy cataloging with a high rate of accuracy • Research bibliographic databases (OCLC) and accurately match bibliographic records to input record into ILS • Perform collection maintenance activities such as pulling and withdrawing selected items from ILS • Develop and maintain database of donated material to add to collection • Sort and distribute mail • Perform minor book repairs • Re-assign materials upon request • Prepare newspapers and serials for public areas • Encodes materials during RFID tagging process • Performs all tasks related to opening and closing procedures • Completes daily deposit, monthly reports, and reconciles Library fund • Gathers and submits statistical data as required for administration • Assists with preparing and delivery of Library programs such as craft and book club • Responsible for securing building at closing time, ensuring all doors are locked, secured and setting alarm system • Provides reference assistance with local history special collections in-person, by phone, by post mail, email and fax • Must have knowledge of basic archiving principles when organizing, inventorying, re-housing, and scanning historical documents • Ability to work with digital collection management software used to organize, digitize, and make archive collections available on Library website • Must have ability to perform basic troubleshooting of essential software issues • Promote digital collections for greater visibility, making content discoverable through social media and other online channels • Monitors equipment to ensure it stays in good working condition • Ability to keep up with continuously changing technology related to changing Library environment • Performs basic maintenance of computers, printers, copy machines, digital microfilm reader/scanner, PC scanners, and other equipment common to the library environment • Maintain knowledge of content offered in Library electronic resources including databases provided by Texas State Library, as well as how the resources are accessed • Basic knowledge of social media platforms to create and add content to social media pages • Assists or presents technology classes offered to the public such as, Basic Computer Skills, Online Resources, and Electronic Devices • Create and design promotional material using assigned software • May be asked to perform additional duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work • Non-Exempt - Part-Time

Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

Minimum Qualifications • Associate's Degree (AA/AS) or Two-Year Technical Certificate • Two (2) Years of job-related experience

A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
