Summary

You will serve as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Helper for the Facilities Management Service located in Seattle, Washington. The role involves installing, inspecting, and repairing a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air‑conditioning units, including walk‑in coolers, reach‑in coolers, refrigerators, ice cream cabinets, deep freezers, evaporative coolers, and other equipment. The incumbent will perform troubleshooting, repairs, and routine maintenance to keep HVAC systems operating efficiently.

Qualifications

Certification Requirement: EPA Section 608 Technician Certification, Type 4 (Universal). Candidates must hold valid certification under 40 CFR Part 82 (Section 608 of the Clean Air Act). Experience: No specific training or experience length is mandatory; however, applicants must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties described. Evidence of training or experience should be detailed on the resume and reviewed under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screen‑Out Element: Ability to perform the job with normal supervision.

Duties

  • Identify causes of faulty equipment and perform repairs on refrigeration and air conditioning units.
  • Conduct tests on units and make repairs that can be performed without specialized equipment.
  • Perform visual, audible, and mechanical checks to ensure proper temperature and operation of conditioned spaces.
  • Check proper oil levels, monitor for unusual noises, and detect overheated bearings.
  • Inspect and repair loose connections, faulty insulation, and frayed or loose belts, gaskets, and pulleys.
  • Execute replacement of major components such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, drive assemblies, thermostats, coils, and related parts.
  • Apply cleaning, lubricating, and basic electrical adjustments to maintain system performance.
  • Document work performed and parts replaced, and follow specified procedures for safety and quality.

Physical Requirements

The job requires carrying tools and testing devices that weigh seldom more than 50 pounds. Most equipment is reachable from the floor or ladders; occasionally platforms or scaffolding are needed to reach fans, electrical lines, or ductwork. The incumbent must stoop, stretch, bend, kneel, and perform repetitive lifting in uncomfortable positions, often working from ladders, scaffolding, or platforms in hard‑to‑reach locations. The work includes routine use of ladders, portable ladders, towers, and mobile platforms.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM.
