Summary
Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic position is part of the Facility Management Service Line (FMS) at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System – located in West Haven, CT. The role includes installing, diagnosing, and repairing refrigeration and air conditioning equipment across a variety of systems. Responsibilities include heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating air in commercial and industrial facilities.
Qualifications
Applicants must demonstrate sufficient training or experience, evidenced by a resume describing knowledge, skills, and abilities. Qualifications will be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element and the following job elements: Equipment Assembly – Installation – Repair, Interpret Instructions – Specifications (blueprints), Materials Technical Practices, Troubleshooting, Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without undue supervision. Voluntary or paid experience (including national service) will be credited per hour used. A full year of work is considered 35‑40 hours per week. Part‑time experience is credited on an actual‑time basis. EPA Section 608 “Universal” certification is required.
Duties
- Calculate airflow and pressure–temperature characteristics for HVAC systems.
- Locate and repair faulty equipment quickly to minimize downtime.
- Diagnose problems before disassembly, perform correct repairs to ensure proper system functioning.
- Perform complex repairs: installing and fitting connecting rods, crankshafts, piston rings, bearings, bushings.
- Overhaul valves and related components (gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, couplings).
- Align motors and flywheel drives.
- Examine refrigeration cycle, low side and high side pressure, temperatures of cooling units, liquid and suction lines, and running time of mechanisms.
- Visual and audible inspection for leak probability and execute prescribed test procedures.
- Identify faulty equipment causes and repair large air‑conditioning systems (heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, circulating).
- Work with various methods: mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption, steam jet, air cycle.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to meet team goals.
