Sanitation Equipment Operator
to be part of the Public Works Department/Sanitation Division Team! The Department The is a dynamic organization that readily adapts to the needs of the Torrance Community in providing quality and reliable service to the public. The department is made up of over 200 employees within five distinct divisions who provide service to our residents, businesses, and other City departments to improve and maintain the City's streets, sidewalks, landscaping, traffic, sewers, and water systems.
The Division The is divided into three sections that handles residential and City refuse and recycling collection, residential street cleaning, and maintenance of the City sewers and wastewater. The current position is in the refuse and recycling section.
The Position Sanitation Equipment Operators
in the refuse and recycling sectionoperate various heavy vehicular equipment to collect and dispose of solid waste and recyclable commodities.
Sanitation Equipment Operators
safely drive a side, front, or rear loading and/or roll-off truck on an assigned route and according to an established schedule to collect, transport, and dispose of refuse, recyclable materials, and/or green waste. The operators inspect assigned equipment daily to ensure safe operation; maintain mileage, weight, route and vehicle inspection and service records; and provide information to the public on refuse, recyclable, and green waste removal policies, procedures and schedules and receive and respond to complaints as appropriate.

Sanitation Equipment Operators work 10 hours a day, four days a week (4/10 schedule).
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Experience & Education Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Formal or informal education which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance; and
one year of responsible experience in operating construction, agricultural, or heavy vehicular equipment and/or refuse trucks.
License and/or Certificates
Possess and maintain a
valid Class B
California Driver's License without any air brake restrictions and medical certification.
Ideal
Candidate In addition to the minimum qualifications, successful candidates will possess the following:
At least one year experience operating heavy vehicular equipment; Refuse collection/recycling collection experience; No driving points for at least one year; The ability to work effectively with co-workers; Good customer skills and the ability to interact with the public; and The ability to work overtime and work a 4/10 schedule.
