Summary

Medical Assistant performs specialized work in inpatient or ambulatory care settings. Emphasis of the work is on assisting providers, nurse managers and Case Manager in the examination and treatment of patients and performing a variety of related clerical tasks.

Responsibilities

Administrative Duties (may include but not limited to):

Using computer applications Answering telephones. Welcoming patients. Updating and filing patient medical records. Coding and filling out insurance forms. Scheduling appointments. Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services. Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping. Clinical Duties (may include but not limited to):

Taking medical histories. Preparing patients for examination. Assisting the physician during exams and certain procedures. Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens. Performing basic laboratory tests. Drawing blood. Taking electrocardiograms; May perform other advanced clinical duties under direction and supervision of a nurse or a physician, as needed based on assigned unit. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally, requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

Graduation from an approved Medical Assistant school is required.

Skill

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the clinical area.

Credentials

Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants or credentialing as a Registered Medical Assistant by the American Society of Medical Technologies preferred. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
