The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax and Novato. With minimal supervision, the ESL Instructor plans and teaches noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults in the community who want to improve their English to work toward educational and career goals, succeed on the job, and participate as active community members. Classes are offered in person in West Marin (Tomales and Bolinas) and South Novato. Typical Duties

Preparing and grading all class assignments and examinations. Advising, assisting, and evaluating students and learning outcomes. Participating in program activities, including curriculum and program planning, development, evaluation, and decision making, as well as the development of new teaching-learning methods and materials. Schedule/Hours

The positions in South Novato are on Tuesday and Wednesday, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. The positions in Bolinas or Tomales are Tuesday 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM and Wednesday 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM or 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. About You

The ideal candidate feels comfortable with course and curriculum development. They have experience creating lesson plans for adult learners, goal setting, and tracking program outcomes. The candidate should be familiar with teaching and learning theory, community outreach and equity work, and comfortable teaching in person in rural communities and online via Zoom. The candidate utilizes multi-sensory methods and cultural competency to engage differences in learning styles and abilities. Ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable. Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to two years of experience teaching English as a Second Language. Completion of a TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate program, or completion of 30 semester units in a closely related subject may be substituted for the experience to a maximum of one year. Special Requirements

The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete a background investigation. Bilingual Testing/Certification

To be eligible for a bilingual differential, the successful candidate must possess bilingual skills and must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to appointment. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidate possesses the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements. Important Information
