Job Description Salary: Negotiable Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly organized and experienced Open Deck Dispatcher to manage and coordinate freight operations for flatbed, step-deck, and other open-deck trailers. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of load securement, oversized freight regulations, and route planning to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of goods. This role requires strong communication, problem-solving, and negotiation skills to maximize fleet productivity and ensure excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities:
Load Planning & Assignment: Assign loads to drivers based on availability, trailer type, and route efficiency. Coordinate backhauls to reduce empty miles and maximize profitability.
Driver & Fleet Coordination: Communicate with drivers regarding load details, pickup and delivery schedules, and route changes. Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, Hours of Service (HOS), and safety protocols.
Load Securement & Compliance: Verify that loads are properly secured using chains, straps, and tarps as needed. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations for oversized and overweight freight. Obtain necessary permits for over-dimensional loads.
Route Optimization & Problem-Solving: Plan efficient routes while considering weight limits, bridge clearances, and restricted roads. Monitor road conditions, weather, and traffic to adjust plans as necessary.
Customer & Broker Relations: Build and maintain relationships with shippers, brokers, and customers to secure high-paying loads. Negotiate rates and ensure profitability for each shipment. Provide timely updates to customers on load status and delivery times.
Issue Resolution & Emergency Handling: Address driver breakdowns, delays, or other issues to minimize service disruptions. Work closely with maintenance teams to schedule repairs and minimize downtime.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of dispatching experience in flatbed, step-deck, or open deck freight. Strong understanding of load securement, permits, and oversized freight regulations. Experience working with trucking management systems (TMS) and load boards. Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities. Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Strong negotiation skills to secure competitive freight rates. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, TMS software, and ELD systems.
