Job Description

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Office Assistant provides administrative and clerical support to academic faculty of the college. This position will use a variety of computer software programs, platforms, templates, forms, and databases to provide clerical support in an academic environment. Will enlarge and reformat teaching, professional development, and institutional materials to make them accessible; assist with creating and managing Canvas Learning Management system course websites and responding to course Canvas questions. Will assist with managing Zoom invitations & videos. Will assist with course video production and video editing; will help edit and update course syllabi; process enrollment management forms, professional memberships and travel requests; assist with basic research in library and academic databases; assist with preparation of documents and PowerPoint presentations; convert college documents and articles from single-spaced PDFs to ePub or other formats; enlarge documents. Will file and/ or scan documents, organize books and related academic materials. Will maintain office in an organized manner and ensure office has all needed supplies and materials

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications Intermediate to advanced skills in Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe; ability to quickly learn a variety of college proprietary software programs and databases. Knowledge of Canvas and/or other learning management platforms. Ability to alphabetize and perform clerical tasks including filing, scanning, and copying. Knowledge of printers and scanners. Good reading skills and ability to proofread. Knowledge of and experience in an academic library. Ability to prioritize and multi-task, learn new procedures and work independently. Capable of following directions in order to carry out key tasks and willingness to ask for clarification. Ability to provide assistance with emails and announcements. Ability to see small and single-spaced print. Ability to reach, bend, and twist. Ability to use a step stool. Additional Considerations

Knowledge of preparing travel forms and documents. Proven experience providing administrative and clerical support in an office setting. Knowledge of Canvas, Blackboard, and/or other learning management platforms.
