WSP is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer – Bridges to join our Transportation Group in the Raleigh, NC office. This role offers the exciting opportunity to lead the technical design of transportation structures ranging from small bridges to large, complex projects.
Your Impact
Perform professional structural analysis and design for bridges and retaining walls at a Mid‑to‑Senior level.
Apply advanced structural techniques throughout project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, and construction.
Collaborate within an engineering team to design and check bridge superstructures and substructures; develop plans, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates.
Coordinate with other disciplines, subconsultants, and clients, and utilize OpenBridge Software.
Review and ensure design plans comply with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
Prepare technical reports and presentations explaining research, concepts, and recommendations.
Maintain quality control standards for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
Assist in scoping and developing small to medium‑sized projects.
Provide guidance and training to entry‑level engineers.
Interact professionally with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients.
Collaborate proactively with engineers and authorities on federal, state, regional, local, and private improvement projects and business development opportunities.
Stay current on latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are We’re looking for a results‑driven professional with a strong technical foundation and a collaborative mindset.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (or closely related discipline).
7 to 10 years of post‑education engineering experience with structural or civil design.
Registered Professional Engineer, preferably in North Carolina or with the ability to obtain NC PE.
Proficient knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, and design processes.
Strong technical computation skills and application of engineering principles to project work.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences.
Demonstrated self‑leadership, attention to detail, and ability to multitask in a dynamic environment.
Independent work ethic with minimum supervision and the ability to guide junior team members, adhering to QA/QC standards.
High proficiency with technical writing, office automation, design software (MicroStation, OpenBridge, MDX, STADD, etc.), and analytical tools.
Critical thinking and problem‑solving ability to reach effective, economical solutions.
Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies.
Availability for flexible schedules and occasional travel as project needs dictate.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering.
NCDOT Bridge design experience and familiarity with current NCDOT manuals and standards.
Membership or active participation in professional practice organizations.
