The Opportunity In this role you will have the opportunity to:
Function as a technical lead substation design engineer for FACTS projects involving distribution, sub‑transmission and transmission level voltage classes.
Utilize safety and regulatory standards (IEEE, IEC, NEC, NESC, NERC, ISO/RTO) to define project requirements, review deliverables and collaborate with owner and OEM resources.
Conduct research to locate required white papers, brochures, publications or standards for non‑standard design work.
Convey technical information to the project team and lead internal discussions to close out technical or project management topics.
Lead internal discussions with the owner engineering team to close out technical or project management topics.
Candidates must be located or willing to relocate to any Black & Veatch U.S. Regional Office.
Key Responsibilities
Continuously develop knowledge and provide guidance on design guides, standards and B&V policies.
Apply B&V quality program practices and support continuous improvement efforts.
Prepare engineering deliverables, perform research, and develop equipment or material selection recommendations.
Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements, and review lower‑level engineering work.
Coordinate with all internal and external team members on moderately complex projects.
Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers on high‑voltage substation projects and communicate them to project team members.
Provide mentorship to lower‑level professionals and foster knowledge management.
Ensure adherence to corporate and division programs and approve timesheets and expense reports.
Preferred Qualifications
High voltage (HV) substation design experience – Physical and/or Protection & Controls.
Project lead and technical specialist experience overseeing utility substation clients and projects.
QA/QC reviews – Quality Assurance / Quality Checks experience.
Experience coordinating and communicating with Clients, Multidisciplinary Leads and Project Managers.
Professional Engineer (PE) License.
Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office applications.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program.
Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements, including criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.
Work Environment/Physical Demands Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
