Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization)
The Primary Purpose of the Position is to perform the functions of a Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) in the Cardiac Catheterization and/or Electrophysiology/Special Procedures (EP) Lab in a full performance capacity. The MIT will work in the area(s) assigned by the supervisor and the area(s) assigned may be modified to meet the needs of the organization.
Salary Base pay range: $39,190.00/yr - $78,200.00/yr. This range is provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.
Responsibilities
Assist with preparation and testing of a variety of complex cardiac diagnostic procedures.
Operate and monitor specialized cardiac monitoring equipment; provide patient and family education within scope of practice.
Monitor vital signs and record pressure measurements needed to complete the study; identify and report EKG/rhythm abnormalities.
Operate, monitor, and collect data from equipment used in procedures such as cardiac catheterization, angiography, electrophysiology studies, pacemaker/leadwire insertions, and related procedures under physician direction.
Maintain knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, waveforms, sterile technique, and equipment used in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
Assist with insertion of temporary transvenous pacemaker catheters and manage intra-aortic balloon pump equipment during procedures as applicable.
Prepare patients for procedures, scrub, circulate, and monitor in complex invasive cardiovascular procedures as part of a team.
Complete cases and document results; educate patients and families regarding procedures and post-catheterization care.
Duties
Provide support for both diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, including trans-esophageal echocardiography and cardioversion.
Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment used in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory; ensure quality control and performance improvement indicators are understood.
Work schedule typically includes 8 or 10 hour shifts; may be required to work other shifts, be on call, and work weekends or holidays as patient care requires.
Registration/certification: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are desirable.
Qualifications
U.S. Citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy.
Education: No specific educational requirements for this occupation; education may be substituted for experience at GS-4 and GS-5 levels.
Licensure/Certification: Not required for this occupation, though strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Language: English proficiency in speaking and writing.
Experience/ KSAs: Varies by grade; see standard VA qualification requirements for details (GS-4 to GS-7 and above). Includes knowledge of medical terminology, ability to learn equipment components and settings, patient care, and ability to operate diagnostic/therapeutic equipment; ability to recognize patient distress and communicate effectively.
Preferred qualifications: RCIS/CCI/RCES certification preferred; 2 years recent MIT Cath/EP experience preferred; CRT/ARRT certification preferred.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08; the selectee may be placed in the range GS-04 to GS-08 depending on qualifications.
