Overview
Generaldescription: The Audit Division employs Tax Auditors nationwide. Tax Compliance is the Audit Division’s primary focus. We strive to increase tax reporting accuracy and to promote greater voluntary compliance for the state of Texas.
As a Tax Auditor for the Comptroller’s office, you’ll join a bright, forward-thinking agency where a strong work ethic affects and enriches Texans’ lives every single day. This position is one of public trust and requires a high degree of confidentiality in handling all taxpayer records, services, audits and/or transactions. In-office work is required for the first six months while you complete Basic Audit Training that requires an overall training grade of 75 or above. Travel to training centers in Austin, Dallas, or Houston is required approximately every 3 weeks. Teleworking is permitted after six months. Travel reimbursement is provided for business needs. All auditors attend yearly audit training approved by the Texas CPA Association and it counts towards Continuing Professional Education Credit for CPAs.
Texas: Salary often posted as ranges; entry-level and progression details depend on knowledge of Texas tax law and auditing experience. Salary examples listed: Tax Auditor I – $5,416.67 to $6,562.50; Tax Auditor II – $5,875.00; Tax Auditor III – $6,562.50.
In this role you will:
Prepares for audit engagement on entry-level tax audits.
Establishes audit period; reviews current and prior audit findings; reviews pertinent law, rules, and other information; develops audit plan.
Conducts audits, identifies records, reviews taxpayer’s accounting system, and communicates findings to the taxpayer.
Prepares and presents audit reports in accordance with agency policy.
Verifies data entries and prepares audit schedules with projections; prepares audit plan documentation and assembles audit package.
Meets training requirements and prioritizes tasks for efficiency.
Supports assignments through the redetermination process and hearings, including testifying as needed; performs administrative tasks per policy.
Licenses/Certifications: A valid Texas (or state of residency) driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance, and satisfactory driving record are required. Employees may need to use personal mobile phones for two-factor authentication; emergency communications may occur via mobile.
Minimum Qualifications:
Tax Auditor I: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting; or related degree with accounting coursework; or degree plus 24 semester hours of accounting.
Tax Auditor II: Must be Tax Auditor I, currently employed within the Audit Division. Five years’ experience as a full-time Tax Auditor may be considered for higher entry levels on a case-by-case basis.
Tax Auditor III: Must be Tax Auditor II, currently employed within the Audit Division.
