Comptroller - Tax Auditor I - III - Tyler Audit Office at Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. This is a public trust role focusing on tax compliance audits nationwide.
In-office work is required for the first six months while completing Basic Audit Training. Responsibilities
Prepare for audit engagement on entry-level tax audits. Establish audit period; review current audit file and prior audit findings. Follow established procedures to conduct audits. Conduct entrance conference, identify, review and understand taxpayer’s accounting system. Determine scope of audit and develop audit plan including testing of internal controls and reconciliations. Inspect and analyze taxpayer’s books and records to ensure compliance, document exceptions, and keep taxpayer informed of findings. Implement deviations from audit plans and document deviations to improve efficiency. Conduct exit conference to discuss findings and explain taxpayer rights. Prepare and present audit reports that conform to prescribed policy. Verify accuracy of data entries and reports; prepare audit schedules with tax projections. Prepare timely and detailed audit plan documentation and assemble audit package. Meet training requirements and prioritize, plan, and organize assignments for efficiency. Support assignments through the redetermination process and hearings, testifying as needed. Perform administrative tasks per office and division policy. Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or related field with required accounting hours. Experience as a full‑time Tax Auditor with private, state, or local government agencies considered for higher entry-level positions. Valid Texas driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. For Tax Auditor I: full-time experience and required education. For Tax Auditor II: must be a Tax Auditor I currently employed within the Audit Division. For Tax Auditor III: must be a Tax Auditor II currently employed within the Audit Division. Five years of full‑time Tax Auditor experience may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis. CPA license: all audit training is approved by Texas CPA Association and counts toward CPABCE. Salary
Tax Auditor I – $5,416.67 per month (first year). Tax Auditor II – $5,875.00 per month (first year). Tax Auditor III – $6,562.50 per month (first year). Important Notes to the Candidate
