Commure + Athelas is seeking a Director of Engineering to help build Air, our cutting-edge Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform from the ground up. The Air Engineering Team owns all EHR features end-to-end, closely integrating with AI and RCM teams to deliver a seamless, data-driven healthcare experience for providers and patients. The role leads the Air Engineering Team, overseeing the EHR product that serves as the core operating system for our practices. The product, Air, provides practice staff, physicians and administrators with everything they need to navigate the care journey. You will work with the team to drive high-impact product initiatives, mentor and grow engineers, and ensure the scalability, reliability, and performance of our platform as we expand to support thousands of practices nationwide. You will foster a culture of continuous improvement and play a key role in delivering solutions that eliminate inefficiencies in healthcare operations.

What You’ll Do Lead and grow a team of 15+ engineers and 1 EM, ensuring clarity of purpose, healthy execution, and strong collaboration.

Maintain the team’s startup mindset in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.

Drive the technical direction and execution of the Air platform, ensuring scalability as we grow to support thousands of practices and millions of users.

Partner with Product, Design, Operations, and cross-functional teams to build products and features that solve high-value problems and delight customers.

Manage project and resource prioritization to focus on the most important work streams with appropriate urgency and technical rigor.

Improve operational processes to deliver high-quality products in a timely and efficient manner.

Uphold high standards in system design, code quality, and engineering operations, fostering reliability and ownership.

Coach and develop engineers, supporting career growth, technical excellence, and a high-performing culture.

Foster a strong, in-person culture of collaboration, inclusion, and mutual respect within the engineering team.

Required 8+ years of software development experience in fast-paced, scaling environments.

4+ years of experience leading engineering teams, including mentoring and performance development.

Proven technical leadership with ability to influence architectural and strategic product decisions.

Strong product mindset balancing technical requirements with user needs and business goals.

Full-stack expertise (e.g., ReactJS, Python, PostgreSQL).

Familiarity with modern API designs (GraphQL, REST) and backend-for-frontend architectures.

Experience managing resource allocation to deliver projects on time with appropriate technical rigor.

Excellent communication skills for collaboration across cross-functional teams and leadership.

A passion for healthcare innovation and meaningful patient care impact.

Preferred Experience scaling engineering teams in high-growth environments.

Background in building and optimizing scalable web applications focused on performance and user experience.

Experience in regulated industries (healthcare, finance, insurance) with emphasis on compliance, security, and reliability.

Compensation Range: $200K - $240K
