General Description The Audit Division employs Tax Auditors nationwide. Tax Compliance is the primary focus. As a Tax Auditor for the Comptroller’s office, you’ll join a forward-thinking agency where a strong work ethic enriches Texans’ lives every day. This position requires a high degree of confidentiality in handling all taxpayer records, services, audits, and/or transactions.

Responsibilities

Prepares for audit engagement on entry-level tax audits.

Establishes audit period; reviews current audit file and prior audit findings as required by division policy.

Follows established procedures to conduct audits on entry-level tax audits.

Conducts entrance conference to identify availability of records and to review and understand taxpayer’s accounting system; determines scope of audit and develops audit plan.

Inspects and analyzes taxpayer’s books and records; documents exceptions and keeps taxpayer informed of findings.

Prepares and presents audit reports that conform to prescribed agency policy on entry-level tax audits.

Verifies the accuracy of data entries and reports; prepares clear audit schedules with tax projections.

Meets training requirements; prioritizes, plans, and organizes assignments to optimize efficiency.

Supports assignments through the redetermination process and hearings, including testifying as needed.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting; or a finance bachelor’s or master’s degree in business administration with at least 12 hours in accounting courses; or a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any other field with a total of 24 semester hours of accounting.

Experience Substitution

Five years’ experience as a full-time Tax Auditor with private, state, or other local government agencies may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Licenses/Certifications

A valid Texas (or state of residency) driver's license, current proof of automobile insurance and a satisfactory driving record are a condition of employment.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications. CPA employees in the same classification, if selected, will be laterally transferred with no increase in salary.
