Temporary Faculty Compensation Consultant
Job Summary
The Faculty Compensation Consultant is a vital member of the HR team, serving as a collaborative business partner with campus clients and implementing best practices that are compliant and attentive to business needs and market competitiveness. The consultant partners at various levels across the university, as well as the UNC System Office, and the Office of State Human Resources. This position provides comprehensive guidance regarding regulations, policies, processes, and initiatives to ensure alignment with UNCW compensation programs, UNC System compensation policies, and state/federal guidelines.

The consultant works independently, using sound judgment, diplomacy, and tact while advising and consulting with the deans’ offices, chairs, directors, and faculty. The position works in a customer‑centric, fast‑paced environment that requires work to be performed with a sense of urgency in completing day‑to‑day compensation activities while focusing on high performance, collaboration, and innovative solutions. The consultant serves as an internal change agent and is adept at collaborating with various constituents to ensure processes, procedures, structures, training, and related initiatives are implemented in ways that deliver the expected results. As a member of the Human Resources department, the consultant is expected to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate professional judgment when interacting with colleagues throughout the university and the UNC system.
Depending on the needs of the department, this temporary position may be requested to provide administrative support to any unit within Human Resources.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Graduation from a four‑year college or university and two years of progressively responsible experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating, and promoting HR best practices in the context of organizational goals and objectives; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Business Analytics, or other closely related field.
2+ years of related Classification and Compensation experience (position classifications, position studies, organizational design, job design, client‑facing consultation, statistical analyses, survey participation and analysis, reporting, annual increase process, project team, etc.).
Classification and compensation experience at an institution of higher education.
Experience and training within the UNC System and/or NC Office of State Human Resources Classification or Salary Administration policies and procedures.
Presentation and training experience.
Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, Outlook).
Project management experience to lead the implementation of small to moderate scope projects.
Data management skills including tracking, reporting, auditing.
Experience with position management software (e.g., PeopleAdmin, PeopleSoft).
Experience training groups and individuals both virtually and in person.
Certifications in Compensation and/or Human Resources – CCA, CCP, SCP/S‑SCP, PHR, SPHR, SHRM.
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The UNCW Office of Human Resources and Equal Opportunity within the Chancellor’s Division is the central office responsible for HR operations and Title IX/Clery compliance. It is organized into seven core units: Academic HR, Benefits, Classification & Compensation, Employee Relations & Engagement, HR Systems & Salary Administration, Talent Acquisition, and Title IX and Clery Compliance. The Classification and Compensation unit is dedicated to ensuring that job roles are clearly defined and employees are fairly compensated. Key responsibilities include developing and managing job classification systems, determining competitive pay structures, conducting market research, providing expert consultation and training, and creating transparent compensation policies.
