Position Title: Police Officer Trainee

Salary Range: $39,462 - $45,919 per year

Position Summary The main purpose of the UNC Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through law enforcement and crime prevention. The selected candidate(s) will patrol campus and investigate complaints and violations of State laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. This person also develops and implements preventative patrol techniques and performs specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices.

Applicants may be expected to attend a 5-6 month full‑time Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) course delivery. Those candidates will be expected to successfully complete BLET, pass the state BLET written exam, and achieve immediate certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Ability to qualify for attendance at a State of North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Academy, including satisfying all relevant background check and physical agility requirements as required by the NC Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

At least 20 years of age at time of appointment.

Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.

Pass an in-depth background investigation, including driver’s history, criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening, and physical fitness test.

Successfully complete a three‑week department orientation course and a twelve‑week department field training program during probationary period; satisfactorily complete the state‑mandated probationary period.

Possess effective oral and written communication skills and ability to interact professionally with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system.

Be considered an ‘ESSENTIAL’ Emergency Duty Employee, required to report to work according to the usual schedule or upon notification to report outside of the usual work schedule.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited community college or university.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements Must meet physical and psychological requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission, including a physical exam, psychological exam, drug test, and polygraph examination. Must be able to subdue resisting suspects, operate law enforcement vehicles under emergency conditions, pursue fleeing suspects, perform searches of people and buildings, exercise independent judgment in use of force, endure verbal and mental abuse, comprehend legal documents, and command emergency personnel during accidents and disasters.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The employee will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training on reporting responsibilities.
