Position Summary
Architect at
G.M. Hill Engineering, Inc. (GMHILL)
– a fast‑growing, woman‑owned, small business headquartered in Jacksonville, FL – responsible for delivering complete projects from concept to construction administration. The role involves overseeing multiple projects simultaneously, leading a design team, and ensuring quality, scope, budget, schedule, and client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the development of design concepts, schematic, design development, construction documents and construction administration.
Conduct programing and design charrettes with team members, end users and stakeholders to translate complex problems into buildable solutions.
Prepare working drawings, calculations, specifications, schedules, cost estimates, basis‑of‑design narratives and coordination documents.
Ensure compliance with building codes, ADA guidelines, client requirements and applicable federal, state and local laws.
Coordinate with in‑house and outside consultants to develop integrated construction documents.
Maintain project drawings, documentation and communications in the GMHILL filing system for easy retrieval.
Perform field activities such as observations, condition assessments, photography and measurements.
Respond to RFIs, review shop drawings, and facilitate change order and invoicing processes.
Travel to project sites and client meetings as required.
Assume the lead Architect role on assigned projects, directing and supervising other designers/drafters.
Participate in business development activities, proposals and presentations when needed.
Perform additional assignments directed by the Director of Architecture.
Education & Training Requirements
Registered Architect in Florida, Virginia, South Carolina or Georgia (required).
Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Architecture from an NAAB‑accredited institution.
Experience Requirements
Minimum 5 years in increasingly responsible architectural positions.
Minimum 3 years as project architect or project manager.
Federal project experience (Defense and/or Civilian Agency) preferred.
LEED AP BD+C a plus.
Skill and Competency Requirements
Self‑starter, highly motivated, and able to manage multiple concurrent projects.
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships.
Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
Strong communication, organization, time‑management and problem‑solving skills.
Leadership ability to train, develop, coach and mentor others.
Valid driver’s license, current passport and ability to travel as needed.
Successful background check and compliance with GMHILL’s Drug and Alcohol policy.
Physical Demands
Walk terrain and surfaces that may be far, uneven or temporary.
Regularly sit, stand, walk, talk and hear.
Use hands to finger, handle or feel extensively.
Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
