Position Overview The Patient Access Resource Specialist (PASR) gathers and records required information about patients and provides customer services such as confirming health insurance coverage, determining individual financial obligations, verifying authorizations, scheduling physician office appointments and other clinical services. The role includes liaison responsibilities for physicians, nursing and other staff, answering inbound calls, coordinating a high volume of complicated procedures and appointments, and maintaining accurate patient information in the electronic medical record.
Key Responsibilities & Performance Standards
Enrollment & Authorization – Gather and verify patient demographics, insurance coverage, financial status, confirm eligibility, obtain and follow up on authorizations for clinical care, procedures and laboratory studies and enter data accurately into OHSU databases.
Arranged Care – Coordinate high‑volume, complicated appointments and infusion treatments, create medical records as needed, provide reminders to patients, serve as liaison for physicians and nursing staff, return patient messages, direct patients to appropriate providers and route referrals while obtaining prior records and services.
Customer Service/Point of Service Operations – Deliver highest level of customer service to patients, families, referring providers and internal staff. Check patients in, verify insurance, collect co‑payments, provide receipts, monitor wait times and follow standard work procedures.
Integrated Care – Schedule associated clinical, diagnostic or laboratory services; obtain and coordinate authorizations; direct patients to appropriate providers and manage billing and insurance inquiries.
Telecommunications – Answer and route inbound/outbound calls, create EMR telephone encounters with accurate documentation and provide timely information to callers.
Professional Resource & Development – Attend staff meetings, training and cross‑train; identify process‑improvement opportunities; maintain professional standards; and communicate training needs to supervisors.
Managed Care Coordination – Maintain up‑to‑date insurance plan information, serve as liaison and information resource, obtain managed‑care authorizations and resolve patient and managed‑care related issues.
Required Qualifications
One year of experience in a medical office setting with high‑volume direct patient contact, including scheduling and, if required, managed‑care authorizations.
Thorough knowledge of PAS policies, procedures and integrated care at OHSU, and advanced PAS system skills.
Knowledge & Skills Required
Basic computer skills (word processing, Windows applications, online scheduling). Excellent verbal and written communication, strong customer‑service orientation and effectiveness in confrontational interactions.
Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or higher degree.
Experience in a medical and/or oncology office setting.
Knowledge of Epic systems, OHSU network systems (Outlook, Microsoft Office) and iQueue.
Appointment‑scheduling experience and keyboarding speed of 40‑50 wpm.
High attention to detail, problem‑solving, negotiation skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment.
Excellent customer service on‑site and by phone, professionalism, integrity and attendance dependability.
Additional Details
Clinic operates weekdays with occasional extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays. Employees may need to travel between sites.
Physical requirements include stooping, crouching, reaching, sitting, keyboarding and lifting up to 50 lbs.
