Job Summary

Employees in this class perform manual work requiring the application of techniques and knowledge above the basic laboring level in the upkeep of County roadways, right-of-ways, parks, facilities, and/or other areas for an assigned County department. Employees perform a substantial volume of advanced laboring tasks requiring skills or specialized knowledge acquired through training or work experience. This class is differentiated from the Maintenance Worker II class by one or more of the following: assisting supervisor in keeping equipment maintenance logs and inventory books; training lower-level employees; inspecting areas to determine any repair/maintenance issues; serving as a supervisor in the absence of the assigned supervisor; and/or assisting supervisor with a variety of administrative tasks. Assignments may include the operation of less automotive equipment and the use of specialized machines and hand power tools. Essential Functions Essential Functions:

Depending on the assigned department. an employee in this class may perform any of the following tasks: Maintains grounds at County facilities; maintains ball fields by mowing, clearing weeds, and hedging; applies fertilizers and chemical treatments as needed; prunes and replaces trees, shrubbery, and plants; use backpack blower to remove debris from parking lots and surrounding areas. Maintains County right-of-way areas by removing/trimming trees, mowing, clearing weeds, and hedging. Patches potholes and performs related tasks in repairing and maintaining roads. Maintains County drainage facilities and cleans ditches and other drainage structures; uses manual and medium-to-large power tools for stormwater maintenance and construction. Sets up a safety zone when working on roads/streets or in right-of-way by properly placing signs and directing traffic. Performs minor plumbing work at restrooms; cleans restrooms and stocks supplies at park facilities and gyms; picks up trash. Performs small engine and equipment maintenance; changes oil and blades on mowers; sharpens blades. Uses a variety of hand and power tools to perform job tasks; maintains and repairs tools. Completes work order reports, Inventory and equipment repair/maintenance records. May train lower level employees on proper work methods and procedures and technical aspects of job. May function as acting supervisor in the absence of the assigned supervisor. Assembles and Installs recreational and playground equipment Including fences and gates. Performs a variety of heavy labor work such as load Ing and unloading asphalt, shoveling gravel and dirt, lifting and moving lumber, mixing and placing cement, and disposing of trash and debris. Performs minor electrical work such as installing light switches, hanging fixtures and replacing lamps. Paints equipment, fences and buildings. Operates light-duty trucks. Performs traffic control at construction sites. Performs Inventory of equipment and supplies. Prepares softball, football and soccer fields for games by llnlng.off field: drags and chalks softball fields. Covers landscaped areas by applying the proper amount of mulch or pine straw. Additional Duties: Employees In this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the policies, procedures, activities and organizational structure of the assigned department. Knowledge of manual maintenance work methods, procedures, tools, equipment and tasks. Some knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions. Ability to understand and follow safety procedures. Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects over s ort distances and lighter objects over longer distances. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, under a wide variety of weather conditions (i.e., heat, humidity, cold, dampness). Ability to complete basic work reports, repair/maintenance logs, etc. Ability to learn job-related information, primarily through on-the-job training via oral instructions and observation. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the general public.

Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment with exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, water, machinery with moving parts, and possible sustained periods of hot, cold, or inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as gloves and safety jackets.

Minimum Qualifications 1) Ability to read and write English. 2) Two (2) years of labor experience that provided familiarity with the area of assignment. 3) Valid State of Georgia driver's license. Some positions require an appropriate level State of Georgia Commercial Driver's license (CDL). 4) Certain positions require a flagging certification within six (6) months of employment.

Preference 1) Some supervisory or lead worker experience.
