Litigated Claims Manager | Staff Attorney | Public Entity Pooling | Hybrid

Responsibilities
Hybrid
setting: 2 days in the Sacramento, CA Sedgwick office, and 3 days working from home. The role will require (~5%) travel for in-person board meetings in the SF Bay Area.

Act
as the pool client representative and oversee the pool’s liability program, applying management principles to the litigation process and to Sedgwick pools' use of outside counsel.
Develop strategy, planning, control, organization, implementation, oversight, and monitoring in the context of legal services and related costs.
Analyze inquiries and provide guidance related to memorandums of coverage, risk transfer, litigation process, case strategy, and issues involving additional covered parties.
Review member contracts submitted to pool administration; prepare presentations on claims and issues of interest for meetings or strategic planning.
Attend member meetings, address concerns involving members, TPA, or case development; provide training materials and presentations for members.
Oversee the pool’s liability program and represent the pool in liability matters by participating in litigation proceedings, attending mock trials, mediations, and trials.
Prepare claim processing instructions for use by TPA; prepare and revise policies; conduct quarterly file reviews with TPA; provide feedback on claim handling concerns.
Review TPA recommendations on government claim actions; monitor TPA compliance with contractual obligations and annual MOC review.
Review monthly financial and/or litigation reports from TPA; conduct annual defense panel reviews; communicate with admin team regarding litigation management, MOC, member issues; respond to audits.
Attend meetings of the pool’s committees related to claims matters, litigation and MOC; attend board and governance committee meetings.
Ensure application of management principles to the litigation process and use of outside counsel; oversee early assignment of defense counsel to high-exposure incidents; coordinate with members, TPA, reinsurers, excess carriers, and defense counsel on strategy.
Review information to evaluate cases (police reports, investigation reports); receive and review defense counsel status reports; communicate and prepare strategy updates.
Manage pleadings/discovery; assess tools for valuation; recommend consultants; consider ADR options; determine desired course of action for case disposition.
Manage the pool’s litigation and legal claims via prelitigation management and management of litigated matters; review new matters for coverage; review litigation budgets and reserves; present case-specific information to committees or board for authority or settlement decisions.
Qualifications Education & Licensing
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited college or university required. Current license(s) to practice law in the pool’s jurisdiction or jurisdictions.
Experience
Eight (8) years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Skills & Knowledge
Knowledge of the litigation and trial process in the pool’s jurisdiction
Working knowledge of discovery process, evidentiary rules, and civil procedure
Sufficient knowledge to assess the performance of counsel at trial
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills
PC literate, including Microsoft Office products
Analytical and interpretive skills
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Excellent negotiating skills and ability to create comprehensive, accurate written reports
Ability to work in a team environment and meet performance competencies
Work Environment When applicable and appropriate, consideration will be given to reasonable accommodations.

Clear and conceptual thinking ability; judgment, problem solving, analysis, discretion; ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines.
Physical:
Sit for extended periods (up to eight hours); travel as required.

As required by law, Sedgwick provides a reasonable range of compensation for roles that may be hired in jurisdictions requiring pay transparency in job postings. For the jurisdiction noted in this job posting, the range of starting pay is $124,750 to $149,786 USD annually. Bonus eligible. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401k and matching, PTO, disability and life insurance, EAP, FSA/HSA and other voluntary benefits.
