Position Summary The Academic Advisor coordinates, oversees, and engages undergraduate students to promote their academic, educational, and professional development from orientation through graduation. The role evaluates student progress, counsels on degree requirements, provides guidance on course registration and career planning, interprets university and departmental policies, and presents academic information to orientation groups, potential students, and family members. The advisor supports students transitioning from high school and other colleges to UIC.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide academic advising to prospective and declared Computer Science students, monitoring academic progress and ensuring eligibility for graduation.

Communicate academic progress and findings to coaches (for NCAA compliance), financial aid, department staff, and administrators.

Evaluate students’ progress, assess degree requirements, counsel, and provide related guidance.

Review official student records, including degree checklists, grade accuracy, overload petitions, and curriculum changes, and make authorized changes.

Document all pertinent student information.

Identify students’ needs and provide guidance on academic and professional planning, including educational and career options, analysis of outcomes, and development of action plans.

Guide students through the petition process for exceptions to academic policies.

Serve as subject‑matter expert on course content, degree requirements, and study‑abroad options within the college.

Maintain and update the database to ensure student records accurately reflect degree progress and status.

Participate on committees regarding probation, dismissal, add/drop actions, academic status, degree progress, reinstatement, scholarship awards, and admission of specific applicant cohorts.

Assist in curriculum development and conduct orientation classes for freshmen and transfer students.

Assist in recruiting potential students by advising on general academic requirements for Computer Science and disseminating information about registration procedures.

Advises students transferring from other academic institutions on transfer articulation for Computer Science, evaluating and verifying transfer transcripts and credit petitions.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field.

Demonstrated work experience in student/academic advising, counseling, or a related field, preferably in higher education.

Excellent communication, organization, presentation, and computer skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related software.

Good interpersonal, listening, and communication skills; service‑oriented attitude; demonstrated care and interest in advising; highly organized.
