Ludlow
The Claims Consultant is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and processing claims related to veterans’ benefits, including disability compensation, pension, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), education, healthcare, and other entitlements. This role ensures accurate and timely evaluation of claims in accordance with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regulations, federal law, and internal policies. The consultant supports veterans and their families by ensuring they receive the benefits they are entitled to in a fair and efficient manner. This is a grant funded position through the Massachusetts VFW Foundation through June 30, 2028.
Key Responsibilities
Assist veterans, dependents, and survivors (specifically Western Mass) in filing claims for benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Review veterans’ benefit claims to determine eligibility and benefit entitlements under applicable VA regulations (e.g., Title 38 of the U.S. Code).
Evaluate supporting documentation including service records (DD-214), medical evaluations, treatment records, and dependency information.
Analyze claims for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with VA policy and legal requirements.
Communicate with veterans, beneficiaries, healthcare providers, and VA personnel to gather or clarify information.
Submit claims through VA’s Veterans Benefits Management System (VBMS) or other case management systems and maintain accurate records in accordance with federal privacy and security standards.
Track the progress of submitted claims and maintain communication with VA officials to resolve issues or appeals.
Stay current with changes in VA regulations, procedures, and policy guidance.
Provide support and guidance to veterans regarding the claims process and available benefits.
Represent claimants in VA appeals, including supplemental claims, higher-level reviews, and Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA) cases.
Prepare formal statements, legal arguments, and documentation to support veteran appeals.
Attend hearings virtually or in person as an accredited representative.
Grant compliance tracking and reporting.
Required to perform all similar or related duties as directed by Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess an associate’s degree in business administration, public administration, legal studies, health administration, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience. One to three years of experience in claims analysis, case management, or benefit processing. Knowledge of, or experience with, veterans’ benefits programs strongly preferred. The candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain annual accreditation by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Familiarity with Microsoft Office and VA systems (e.g., VBMS, VetroSpec Tyler) is a plus.
Candidates must be U.S. military veterans or have received an honorable discharged . Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check (CORI) and a pre-employment physical.
