General Description of Duties
Starting placement will generally not exceed 15% of the advertised initial salary range and is based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
The Solid Waste Technician assists the division in providing safe, efficient and cost effective solid waste disposal and recycling service within local, state, and federal environmental guidelines for Leon County Solid Waste. Operates a variety of equipment, heavy, mobile and stationary, and screens waste for prohibited materials. This position is necessary to meet Florida Department of Environmental Protection Solid Waste permits.

Essential Duties
- Be familiar with groundwater rules; monitor groundwater systems; collect samples in accordance with regulations; coordinate sampling and reporting.
- Maintain methane gas well sites; collect gas samples quarterly; coordinate gas reporting to meet DEP requirements.
- Perform annual maintenance of leachate collection system; keep leachate clean-outs clear of debris; ensure continual operation of pump stations; facilitate 5yr jet pumping of systems.
- Operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment such as articulated front-end loader, skid steer, off road dump truck, loader/backhoe, road grader, mechanical sweepers, mechanical vacuum, and track and wheeled excavators.
- Screen waste for prohibited materials; assist with storage of tires, yard waste, and mulch; manage landfill vegetation and slopes to standards.
- Provide support for staff positions upon absence, including scale house attendant duties.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of basic solid waste management operational permit conditions; acceptable and prohibited waste; occupational hazards associated with SWMF operations; components and parts of equipment that require inspection and daily service.
- Skill in operating a variety of heavy equipment and transport trucks; operating a variety of heavy mobile and stationary equipment.
- Ability to read and write, perform simple mathematical calculation; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; make independent judgements; read and understand operator's manuals, policies and procedures; coordinate hands and eyes while performing multiple functions at once; pay close attention to details.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a high school diploma or GED and two years of job related experience. A Class A license is required.
Special Requirements
This position requires training and the successful completion of an FDEP Waste Screening/Spotter course to be completed upon hire.
Other Requirements
All Leon County employees (full-time and part-time, OPS, and PRN) are required to work before, during and after a Declared Local State of Emergency (DLSOE). Participation is considered a condition of employment.
