When working in environments where de‑escalation, isolation, and restraint training is required, employees will be compensated at a rate of an additional $0.50 per hour (elementary) or $0.75 per hour (secondary).

Purpose Statement
The PARAEDUCATOR – Academic Adaptive (AA) provides support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom, with a specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special‑needs students in the general education classroom or a self‑contained classroom; assists in implementing plans for instruction; monitors student behavior during non‑classroom time; provides information to appropriate school personnel; and attends IEP meetings.
This role supports students with very low academic skills and potential social‑emotional, behavioral, communication, and adaptive skill challenges.
Essential Functions
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Assists students, teachers, and other certified personnel in implementing instruction and/or IEPs.
- Attends meetings and trainings (first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de‑escalation training, etc.) to acquire and convey information relevant to job functions.
- Develops, under supervision, instruction for students in individual and group activities to evaluate student progress on IEP objectives.
- Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding HIPAA, FERPA, and IEPs.
- Maintains instructional materials and electronic files/records as required.
- Monitors students in various school environments to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Collects and records observational data to support student progress.
- Provides clerical and general classroom assistance (collecting and inputting data, correspondence, copying, filing, etc.).
- Supervises students in school settings to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Works under both direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines.

- Performs other related duties as assigned, including 1:1 para‑educator tasks as needed.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Skills: Perform multiple tasks with occasionally upgraded skill levels; adhere to safety practices; operate standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate records.
Knowledge: Basic math (fractions, percents, ratios); understand written procedures; write routine documents; speak clearly; instructional procedures; age‑appropriate activities; safety practices; conflict resolution; de‑escalation strategies.
Abilities: Schedule activities, meetings, or events; gather, collate, and classify data; work with diverse individuals; solve problems using data; maintain confidentiality; work as part of a team.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures, leading and coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget.
Work Environment
Physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; fine finger dexterity; 30% sitting, 30% walking, 40% standing. Exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience Job‑related experience desired.
Education (Preferred) Paraeducator Certificate Program.
Education (Minimum) High school diploma or equivalent; optional associate degree or 2 years of college, 72 quarter or 48 semester credits, or passage of the State of Washington Para Pro assessment.
Required Testing
