Senior Medical Science Liaison (Sr. MSL) Responsibilities

  • Provide fair, balanced, objective scientific information and education to opinion leaders, health‑care professionals, and internal partners.
  • Remain an established scientific and clinical knowledge lead on current and future J&J Innovative Medicine products per Therapeutic Area alignment.
  • Stay abreast of current scientific and treatment landscape trends in therapeutic areas of interest.
  • Provide research support for company and investigator‑initiated research.
  • Build external relationships with identified opinion leaders and health‑care providers and manage a geographical territory.
  • Develop and maintain a territory strategic plan that includes educational activities with identified stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate fundamental competencies in Influence & Results Focus, Communication, Stakeholder Engagement, Product & Therapeutic Area Knowledge, and Data Insights & Dissemination.
  • Collaborate with field‑based partners to support healthcare providers and positively impact patient care.
  • Enhance skills in agility, Change Management, Time Management, and Innovation.
  • Conduct all activities in accordance with current regulatory and health‑care compliance guidelines.

Field‑Based Clinical Duties

  • Travel primarily within assigned geography (estimated 80% travel).
  • Engage in virtual and in‑person interactions, prioritizing in‑person engagements when appropriate.

Research Initiatives

  • Leverage knowledge of standards of care and Janssen company/investigator‑sponsored clinical trials to facilitate external‑internal research communication.
  • Engage external investigators regarding unsolicited research inquiries and liaise with R&D, Medical Affairs, and operations teams.
  • Provide clinical trial support for site identification, issue resolution, and participation in site initiation visits and investigator launch meetings.
  • Lead at least one scientific or strategic Immunology project, identifying educational gaps and elevating team acumen.

Scientific Acumen & Knowledge Sharing

  • Participate in team calls, trainings, and journal clubs through scientific dialogue.
  • Attend and lead at scientific conferences to gather and share new scientific information.
  • Actively listen, document, and share medical insights; synthesize data for the MSL team and partners.
  • Allocate time for self‑driven learning of the current scientific landscape.
  • Represent and support JNJ at scientific meetings, congresses, advisory boards, investigator meetings, and speaking engagements.

Support of Department Operations & Internal Partners

  • Perform all administrative requirements accurately and compliantly (e.g., expense reports, activity documentation).
  • Maintain focus and composure in uncertain circumstances with minimal direction.
  • Provide regional and local support to enhance sales training initiatives and improve field personnel competencies.
  • Communicate and collaborate with field‑based partners and other Immunology MSL teams routinely.
  • Partner with others to lead or participate in large‑scale projects.
  • Maintain thorough understanding of regulatory and health‑care compliance guidelines, corporate policies on business conduct, and Medical Affairs SOPs.

Qualifications

  • PharmD, PhD, MD, or other advanced medical degree (NP, PA) with +3 years of relevant TA clinical experience.
  • 2+ years of MSL experience or 2+ years of relevant clinical, research, or related pharma experience.
  • Significant experience giving presentations.
  • Ability to support travel up to 75–80%, including overnight and occasional weekend commitments.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Reside within the assigned territory.

Preferred

  • Knowledge or experience in the relevant TA and/or Immunology.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and remote technologies.
  • Reside in or near Indianapolis, IN or Joliet, IL.

Compensation & Benefits

The expected base pay range for this position is $137,000 to $235,750.

This position is eligible for a company car through the Company’s FLEET program.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance‑based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding individual efforts and company performance. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees and/or eligible dependents are eligible to participate in the following Company‑sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑ and long‑term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance.

Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

  • Vacation – 120 hours per calendar year
  • Sick time – 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in Washington – 56 hours per calendar year
  • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – 13 days per calendar year
  • Work, Personal and Family Time – up to 40 hours per calendar year
  • Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of birth, adoption, or foster care of a child
  • Condolence Leave – 30 days for an immediate family member; 5 days for an extended family member
  • Caregiver Leave – 10 days
  • Volunteer Leave – 4 days
  • Military Spouse Time‑Off – 80 hours
